October is filled with many important events. The Year of Faith begins for the whole Church, the Synod of Bishops for the New Evangelization will convene this month, and we celebrate World Mission Sunday. In many ways this month begins an extraordinary journey of the Church as we seek to revitalize and renew our capacity to share the hope of Christ at home and abroad, across all cultural and faith boundaries. The message of Pope Benedict XVI in Lebanon this past September to youth resonates for us all: "The vocation of Christ's disciples is to be "leaven" in our communities, as Saint Paul says: 'A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.' (Gal 5:9). Be heralds of the Gospel of life and life's authentic values." |

WORLD MISSION DAY 2012
"Called to Radiate the Word of Truth"
Pope Benedict XVI's Message for World Mission Day, Sunday, October 21
This year the celebration of World Mission Day has a very special meaning. The 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council and of the opening of the Year of Faith and the Synod of Bishops on the theme of the New Evangelization contribute to reaffirming the Church's desire to engage with more courage and zeal in the Missio ad Gentes so that the Gospel reaches the ends of the earth. A Eucharistic Celebration for all the World
World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Learn more.
In Scotland, Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien joined pupils of St Peter's Primary School in Edinburgh to launch the posters for Mission Month on the theme of 'Faith in Action.' Fr. Tom Welsh SX, (standing) National Director of Missio Scotland, said:
"The theme is particularly appropriate this year, as the annual focus on the missionary work of the church coincides with the launch of the Year of Faith, marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Pope Benedict has called all to reflect on and deepen our faith, which he describes as a gift which must be shared. This echoes the words of his predecessor, Blessed John Paul II, who encouraged every parish, family and individual to give priority to the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies as the primary channel for meeting our missionary obligation."
The Pontifical Mission Societies are better known under the title Missio Scotland and last year raised almost 347,000 to support the missionary outreach of the Church. This total is the 11th highest total from any country, and quite an achievement for a small country like Scotland, where Catholics number less than 20% of the population. All parishioners have an opportunity to contribute to this on Mission Sunday, 21st October.

The "Miracle" of Peace
Fr. Franco Sottocornola, SX
Sr. Maria De Giorgi, MMX
September 11 2012 was also observed in in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but this time to reflect on peace and inter-religious harmony. The town was chosen because this year marks the 20th anniversary of the explosion of fierce internal strife and war for three interminable years from 1992 to 1995. It commemorated the convocation of inter-religious commitment to peace that Pope John Paul II convened for the first time in Assisi in 1986 and which Pope Benedict XVI solemnly celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011 in Assisi. A Conforti Programme to Tackle Sectarianism in Scotland
The Scottish government wants to better understand and respond to sectarianism in Scotland and has invited a number of organisations, including the Conforti Institute, to develop a programme on this. Conforti has employed two staff members, Geraldine Hill who has a PhD in Peace Studies and 15 years experience of working with Catholic international development agencies, and Helen Martin, a community development specialist, to work on this project.
In the first phase the project is about:
listening to voices of Catholic community in parishes and Diocese
supporting parish and Diocesan groups to come up with community action plans to tackle any problems related to sectarianism that they identify
contributing to broader thinking on sectarianism and how the Scottish Government should respond to it.
Phases 2 and 3 will be about supporting different faith communities to work together to tackle sectarianism through joint action plans. If you would like to get involved in this project, or would like further information please contact Geraldine Hill. |
PEACE DAY What did you do on Friday, September 21th, the United Nations Day celebrating International Peace?
Fr. Rocco Puopolo, SX, joined other Pax Christi Metro West members who united with a wide variety of peace-builders from a many local Churches to celebrate peace on the Framingham Massachusetts town Common from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. There were exhibits, parades, food and games enjoyed by over 200 people who came to witness to those commuting home from work that peace is possible for those who wish to celebrate and work for peace.
The International Day of Peace, a.k.a. "Peace Day" provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982. In 2002 the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

Every responsibility and every commitment spelt out by that doctrine is derived from charity which, according to the teaching of Jesus, is the synthesis of the entire Law (cf.
