Discipleship

Our lives are really masterpieces laid out little by little by the Lord. As disciples of Christ we apprentice ourselves to Jesus Christ.  We take a posture of listeners and learners to scripture, to the Church, to the inspirations and insights we receive everyday in the ordinary stuff of life. The canvas where our lives as disciples of Christ is played out is in a world with different faiths and cultures, of hope and courage, heroic faith and of great injustices. All of these are some of the places our discipleship is worked out, shaped and reshaped by how we respond to them all.

Come Holy Spirit...

Holy Spirit

Fr. Tom Ryan, CSP, heads the Paulist Office for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations.Download his reflection on The Holy Spirit: "...

[O]pportunities for encountering the Holy Spirit are as broad as the world itself. We encounter the Spirit in nature, in the personal world and especially in love relationships, and we encounter the Spirit in the social world-economic, political, cultural." Discover more at his website.

Lanarkshire Social Justice Youth Forum: Report from Colleen Bell

LSJ Forum

The event was held on the 12th of June and ran from 7 - 9pm in the centre. Although we didn't have the expected numbers in the audience, the event was really successful and enjoyed by all. Issues raised by the young people involved focused on youth unemployment, further education and community safety. We had a great response from the panel which included representatives from Labour, Conservative, Unison, Coatbridge College, our very own Martin Greechan, and two representatives from Strathclyde police. We also had a journalist from STV covering the event who through-out the process has been covering our progress with reports on the STV local website.

After the event we received confirmation from Tom Clarke, MP for Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill, that his representative who attended, Sam Harty, had passed on our issues and reports of the event to the Department of Work and Pensions. Sam also forwarded a press release attached which showed that Tom Clarke has mentioned our event and our intentions in recent disagreements with Prime Minister David Cameron over his plans to reduce unemployment.

Our next move is to await a response from the Department of Work and Pensions and start work on proposed plans to solve the issues raised which will be supported by Tom Clarke.

[Colleen leaves the Institute this month and will begin her studies in English and History at Glasgow University. She goes with our good wishes and thanks for helping to establish the Youth Forum as a feature of our work.]

Deacons, Nuns, Laity and even Athlete-Priests to be Olympic Chaplains

Olympics

Some people are simply gifted at sport; they excel at any challenge involving a ball, a stick or a physical contest nearly as soon as they turn their hands to it.

One such person is Fr. Geoff Hilton, a priest from Salford Diocese in the north of England, who will be serving as a chaplain to athletes competing in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Find out more.

Visio Divina: Extraordinary Prayer for Ordinary Time

visio divina

This program is an interactive experience of scripture, art, and faith sharing - but you don't need to be a Van Gogh to lead it (or be involved)! This can be done on its own or incorporated as a prayer experience into other young adult programs.

Creator God, you are the source of creativity itself. Send your Holy Spirit upon me and those who will pray with me today so that we may open our hearts to your holy word and, therefore, be re-created and renewed. Amen.  Find out more.

Dating God

Dating God.mov
Dating God.mov

The journey to God, says author Br. Dan Horan, OFM is a lot like dating. You have to get to know God in the same way and in a similar process as you would with someone you date, when you want to explore another person's truest self.

Dating God is not an answer book or a schema providing easy steps or instructions to have an ideal spiritual life. Rather, it offers a new look at the timeless condition of human longing for a deeper relationship with the Creator.
