We may reap what we sow, but do we get what we give?
Flippancy aside, what are the rewards of giving of ourselves instead of giving to ourselves?
St. Guido Maria Conforti knew the answer to this question. Read more about his life in a new book available from the Xaverians. Contact us for more information.

Last month we shared with you the plans to bring together 1,000 people across Scotland and the world to celebrate faith in prayer and song. Our contacts tell us that they are well on their way to achieving the target of 1,000 participants - including participants in Ethiopia and Kenya! Even if you can't join with others you can share in the event by downloading the prayer and spending some time in reflection by yourself or with friends. |

Confirmation helps lead the way to the kingdom of God
by Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton, longtime national and international activist in the peace movement, and founding member of Pax Christi USA

You're not just saying yes to the ceremony. When you say, "I want to be confirmed," what are you saying yes to? Think about it. It's not just to a ceremony that will be over in a very short time. When you say, "I want to be confirmed" -- and all of us should think about this because we've been confirmed -- you're saying yes to Jesus. You're saying, "Yes, I want to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I want to follow Jesus and live according to His ways." Read more. |
Turning the World Upside Down
Pax Christ USA encourages us to think about how life might be different, particularly for those usually left without options, the poor. By choosing not to accept the injustice of the status quo of the corrupt money changers in the temple, Jesus challenges us to make a choice: join Him in the struggle for the God of life or continue to endure things as they are. What are you doing for Lent this year?

When Did We See You Thirsty? In the best of times, the most common means of supplying a household's daily water supply frequently is a miles-long walk to a river. The long return trip includes a full jerry can, a bulky, rectangular plastic jug that weighs about 40 pounds when full. Learn more. |
News from the UK

As more schools and parishes become interested in linking with other communities overseas, it helps to learn from the experience of others. How can we share in the lives of other communities in ways that don't patronise and avoid viewing them simply through the problems they experience. This new resource from ScotDEC helps schools to make appropriate links through active and enjoyable activities.

Fr Jim Clarke sx is chaplain to Newman College, a sixth-form college in Preston. The chaplaincy web page gives some idea of the opportunities and support offered to students. What opportunities are offered in your school or college to put your faith into practice? Why not write and tell us? You could be featured here and inspire others to get involved too.

CACG Voter Guide
The Common Good in America Today

Pope Benedict XVI roots the social teachings of the Catholic Church in the very nature of God. God is love. ..[It] is this disposition to love that must shape all of our human relations - personal, political, economic and social - if we are to conform ourselves to Jesus Christ. This love, when expressed in our political life, must define and seek the Common Good, a Common Good that respects and defends the dignity of all, champions the poor and the vulnerable, defends the environment from exploitation, and recognizes, as President John F. Kennedy stated, that "here on earth God's work must truly be our own." Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good dedicates itself to Pope Benedict's vision.
The CACG guide lists seven main issues that Catholic voters should consider, starting with the economy and the "unconscionably high rate of unemployment." "Pro-life issues," echo Pope John Paul II's call for a "culture of life," include war, militarism, capital punishment and poverty as well as abortion. |
Campus Conversation on Values
What do young Americans think about economic inequality, educational opportunity, and America's future? How do they relate their personal values and religious beliefs to the 2012 campaign?
On April 19-20, Georgetown University will bring students from around the country together with public figures and the media to elevate the voices of young people in this election season. The Millennial Values Symposium will coincide with the release of a groundbreaking survey of Americans age 18 to 24 on religion, values, and the election, conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and Georgetown's Berkley Center. Talk about moving "Across Borders!"
Flyways

Each spring, more than half a billion birds of 280 species follow the Great Rift Valley along the length of Africa over the Middle East to Turkey where they diverge to Europe and Asia, following one of the most important bird migration corridors in the world. This flyway overarches a tapestry of ecosystems, cultures, and music traditions.
As a musical metaphor for the interdependence of nature and culture, Flyways supports conservation relating to the birds and affirms the music traditions found throughout the region. With the motto "migrating birds know no borders," and through the timeless languages of birds and music, Flyways encourages international collaboration to protect a shared heritage. Read more here.
