Greetings!
Our school year is off to a great start and I am hopeful that you had a great start with your students. On behalf of the YTA Board of Directors, we wish you a successful school year! I would like to congratulate your recruiting efforts as YTA has passed the 2,200 member mark and we are well on our way to reaching our 3,000 membership goal. This summer, our NEA President, Dennis Van Roekel challenged us as NEA members to "lead the charge for education". As the experts in our field, I urge you to get involved in the decision making process on your campus (CEIC), district (DEIC) and at the ballot box. As members of YTA, we must take on the role of being activist in politics or face the consequences of becoming victims of politics. There is too much at stake in our profession to sit on the sidelines and allow politicians who believe they are experts in our field drive the decision making. Many policy makers have taken on the title of "experts" in education, simply because they attended school. A fundamental problem in our profession as well as the state of Texas, is the teachers union's lack of involvement in making our schools better. Our goal is to be "at the table" with all of the decision making in our district that affects us in our job site instead of being "on the menu"! As we seek to increase our membership to 3,000 members, our goal is to have a policy in our district that provides us with exclusive consultation. This will only happen if we get the right people on the school board who will support a policy of exclusive consultation. We have two very important school board elections next May in the Eastwood and Ysleta areas that we must ensure the right people get elected to support us having a seat at the table. Also, because there was a resignation on the Board in the Del Valle area, there will be an opportunity to appoint a new Board member within the next few months. This will ensure that we are in a position to be proactive instead of reactive.
Also, YTA Board of Directors would like to welcome our two new Board members, Sandra Maldonado from Thomas Manor ES, and Bobby Lerma from Cesar Chavez Academy. Currently, there is a vacancy on the YTA Board of Directors for the Multi-Media Coordinator, if you are interested, please email the me at noelmrc2@yahoo.com or call the YTA office.
