As we get ready to enter into the heart of this Christmas Season, it is an opportunity to reflect on our shortfalls, opportunities and successes. As your YTA President, I am happy to announce that our membership is continuing to grow at over 2,100 members. We currently represent more than 50% of all the teachers in the district and almost 20% of our Support Staff (ESP's). We are well on our way to reaching our first goal of 3,000 members so that we can truly represent the majority of "All" employees in this district. As a "union of professional educators", it is time we all come together to ensure the that we continue to improve and provide quality schools for the success of our students. We are a vital partner with the district as we continue to grow and become a safe and collective voice for our teachers and education support professionals to improve the working and learning conditions.
As professional's in YISD, we have earned the respect of educators across the state for our innovative dedication to the success of our students. The hard work of each and every one of you is reflective in the recent announcement of Ysleta ISD being one of the 100 districts nationwide eligible for the
Broad Prize and having 12 exemplary and 28 recognized campuses. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our members for the hard work and dedication you give each and every day to ensure that our campuses are ready for our students and staff every day. From our custodians, nutrition specialist, clerks, aides, maintenance and grounds, to our administrators who serve as instructional leaders and our specialist who provide the expertise to support the teachers in the classroom, and our teachers who work tireless hours preparing and delivering a world class education to our students. We are an exemplary group of dedicated professionals with a goal of becoming a recognized district en route to becoming exemplary.
YTA will continue to ensure that we have quality teachers in every one of our classrooms. Every student deserves a fully qualified, caring, and enthusiastic
teacher, one who knows the subject matter and has knowledge and skill
in how to reach different types of students no matter what their
racial, ethnic, cultural, linguistic, or socioeconomic characteristics
are. Some people have an overly simplistic view of what it takes to be
a good teacher (i.e., intelligence and knowledge of math). Yet research
and practice have shown that being a great mathematician is not
necessarily synonymous with effectively teaching algebra to a roomful
of 13-year -old students.
As professional educators, we will continue to improve our practice as educators and continue to demand the respect we deserve for the quality we deliver.
Respectfully,
Noel Candelaria
YTA President
