ScooPup Pocket Makes Waste Cleanup Easy

Dog waste isn't really a topic that we enjoy talking about. But, with over 77.5 million dogs in the USA alone, it has certainly earned its place as a topic. That said, our job here at PetsWeekly is to show you all the latest and greatest innovations in pet products and while this week's product, The ScooPup Pocket, isn't a technological wonder, it's certainly a handy way to clean up pet waste...>

haboob

If you've seen one Haboob, you've seen them all...

Originally, I had hoped to send this newsletter out last week, but a big dust storm (called a "haboob") came through and wreaked havoc on all things electrical. Besides clogging up pools, creating respiratory problems, and destroying air filters, the haboob stirred up a new problem: Valley Fever.

This is something that both people and pets can get, and there isn't a lot we can do to cure it. Unfortunately, it's as hard on pets as it is people. We've put together a quick article about Valley Fever and why you should be on the alert for symptoms even if you don't live in Arizona.

Dog On Mission:

Last month, we introduced Bree, our traveling "Dog On Mission" and had such a great time with the tweets, that we decided to keep our traveling K9 on the road. To be a part of the fun, you have to follow along on our super-secret Twitter account.

This month, we're headed to the Pacific Northwest and will be navigating our pet-friendly adventure on air, land and sea.

dog-dock

Dog overboard!" I heard the dreadful splash just seconds after our small dog slipped from the boat into the ocean below. Glancing over the side, I saw our tiny pug furiously doggie-paddling in the dark, cold sea. Kiang was struggling to reach the pier, but the frigid Pacific waters were quickly slowing him down and, despite the warm sun overhead, he was already shivering. Suddenly, a large green fishing net surged through the water, scooping the tired pup from the sea in a frenzy of splashing and kicking.

Luckily we were still docked, and the sea was not quite as frigid on this sunny day.  Had it been winter, or in the open ocean, our pug may not have fared as well. When we first thought about taking our pets along for a summer of cruising the Pacific Northwest, it was with little trepidation.  We dreamt of watching our dogs chase seagulls through the early morning surf and seeing our favorite feline vigilantly standing guard on the bow, surveying the whales that surfaced near our yacht at sunset. It didn't take long to understand that the reality of cruising with pets is much different than these sweet daydreams; but with preparation, planning and a lot of patience, we were able to make the dream a reality

Once I was a lonely dog, just looking for a home.

I had no place to go, No one to call my own.

I wandered up & down the streets,

In rain, in heat & snow.

I ate whatever I could find, I was always on the go.. ...»

Guest Author Michael T. Smith offers up this inspiring story about a cat named Bob.   Bob joined us just before Christmas of 2010.   He was a stray cat living outside the office where Ginny worked.  She and her co-workers kept him and the other strays fed.  The weather grew cold. Ginny lost her job. "I'm not leaving him!" she said to me.   Bob came home for Christmas. ...»

While most of us associate bats with vampire movies, the truth is that their role in many ecosystems is invaluable. When you look at all they do for the environment, they aren't nearly as scary. Experts estimate that a single bat can eat between 600 - 1000 insects (including mosquitoes) within a period of an hour.  Besides eating bugs, they help to disperse seeds and assist with pollination. But, on occasion, a bat can carry rabies. ...»
