Support Our Troops Happy Howls,

Welcome Back, Pack Members! We've got a lot going on these days. So, don't think we're ignoring you, we're just trying to keep up with the ever-changing economy, freelancing, and two new foster puppies that require feeding every two hours... But, rest assured that we're here and updating PetsWeekly frequently!

Meanwhile, we have lots of stuff to cover. First of all, I want to give a shout out to our elite military forces who are currently deployed in parts unknown. A special thank you for defending our homeland and thanks for the care you bestow on the many animals you encounter abroad. I know that we have a lot of military readers, and I want to make a special plea to our nonmilitary readers to take a moment to drop a note, card, gift, whatever to our deployed soldiers. Remember - they will be away from their family during the holidays. It's more important than ever to acknowledge their hard work.

And here's what is happening at PetsWeekly!

Upcoming Events:
We've got some great events coming your way this month, so be sure to view our calendar for information on the upcoming Walk-N-Roll, and if you have an event to add, please contact me at petsweekly@gmail.com.

My Life (Cat Coups and other problems): Now, a note on my life for any of you who care... I'm fairly certain that my cats are planning a coup d'etat. There has been a lot of whispering in the laundry room, arrogant staring contests and some terrorist behavior against the coyote by the cog. (Namely, standing on the kitchen table to swipe at his tail when he walks by and covert sneak attacks in coordination with Hephaestion, the demon cat.) We'll have more on the coup next week...

The Economy: For those of you stressed out on the economy (and who isn't?), we've got a fun little parable about life for you and lots of great low-cost gifts for your pets. Yes, I know money's tight, so we're going to be making every effort to bring you some great deals for you and your family in time for the holidays.

Puppy Fostering: It could be that the cats are upset over the two new foster puppies, but we're not sure. Learn more about Puppy Foster 101 on our blog. As you know, the animal rescues worldwide are overrun with abandoned pets. Please, please, please look at alternatives before you drop your pets off and consider assisting with the foster of a puppy or kitten, or the adoption of any animal. If you can't do that, consider making a financial donation to your favorite animal nonprofit. These precious little pack members need our help more than ever.

Check the rest of the newsletter for cool offers (please support us by purchasing through our sponsors), great stories, product reviews, news and videos.

We'll be stepping up the newsletter frequency through the holidays to bring you the best deals. They'll be shorter, but will offer a few extra bonuses for our readers!

Stay tuned! We have lots of great information coming your way!

In the News
4sightHere are the latest headlines for pets in the news! Of particular note, please take a moment to write to this UK judge who let a girl off with a "letter of apology" after she threw the HMS Belfast's ship cat off the boat (resulting in drowning).
Billionaire Rides to Rescue of Wild Mustangs
Wild Horses
A dramatic rescue for BLM mustangs facing certain death in holding pens throughout the country.

"The federal government has been rounding up wild horses since the 1980s, putting them in holding facilities and offering them for adoption to horse lovers, who promise not to sell them for slaughter. But the roundups became aggressive under the Bush administration. As of June, BLM was holding 30,088 animals, more than triple the 9,807 held in 2001." (WA Post)

Madelaine Pickens, wife to billionaire T. Boone Pickens, has made an extraordinary gift of life to these noble creatures! She is adopting nearly 32,000 mustangs who are being held throughout the country. Read more of this amazing and inspiring story.

Cats Gone Wild...
Holiday Lists
I wish I knew more about what was going on with animals lately. There has been an awful lot of strange behavior lately.

For example, this tiger escaped it's compound at the Mexico City zoo (Bioparque Estrella), killed it's caretaker and disappeared in the night before finally being found and destroyed. Earlier in the year, an elephant escaped in Mexico City and was hit by a bus.

In October, a cheetah escaped in the UK, another cheetah escaped on a commercial airline flight, and still another tiger (we all heard about this one) escaped it's enclosure in CA, killing a teen in the process (and I have my doubts on what happened there, but I'll be quiet). Finally - three white tigers mauled a man who jumped into their enclosure in Malaysia. But hey - he jumped into their enclosure... I mean, what kind of outcome can you really expect? At that point, you become a chew toy.

Maybe they should stop showing that movie Madagascar in the zoo each evening. (Okay - it's not funny, but still...)
Rabies In Your Backyard
AquariumRabies is back in the news, and that is a sad thing. Recentl a woman was attacked by a rabid fox, and in AZ alone, there were 19 bats and 1 coyote confirmed with the disease.

It's more important that ever to ensure that your pets are caught up with rabies shots (every 3 years, and that goes for cats too!).

Think you can't afford it? Think again. Nearly every Rabies/Animal Control offers FREE and/or low-cost vaccinations each year. This is a REQUIRED vaccine, folks. Required by law. So get it done!

Learning to Read Dog and Cat Behavior
Tristan Did you know that the way your dog greets you at the door is indicative of how you are feeling?

A few examples:
* Your pup raises his front paw when you walk in: He senses your stress (probably knows how much the dog food you buy for him is!)
* Half Moon Eyes: Ever see how a dog is looking away from the camera with "half-moon" eyes when you take that cute photo with your kids? This is a sign of frustration, irritation and general anger on the part of your dog.

Special thinks to Al Aguinag from AZ Rabies Animal Control for this important information.

We're getting a special interview set up with Al to discuss more behaviors and to learn how you can prevent dog bites, so stay tuned!
New "Must See" Video Clips
Roomba Cat
Here are this week's latest and greatest animal video clips.

I think they kind of remind us why we need to be grateful for the things we have. Even if it's just each other.. Enjoy!
Aspiration Pneumonia In Puppies
Puppies IAspiraton pneumonia can often occur when puppies (and kittens) are tube-fed or bottle-fed. The condition can be deadly. Here's what to watch for:

Symptoms
: Trouble breathing, weakness, cough, gagging, choking, blue lips or gums, noise upon breathing, fever, depression, and loss of appetite.

Treatment
: Veterinary Care! Pup will need chest x-rays, antibiotics and possibly additional, more aggressive treatment. It is important to catch this problem early.

Success: This is a very treatable problem if caught early enough.

DonkeyDonkey Parable for Today's Economy
Donkey in Well One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later the farmer looked down into the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake off the dirt and take a step up on the dirt pile. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would again shake it off and take another step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up..
