Feral Cat Day October 16
Feral Cat Day is rapidly approaching and we hope that you will take the time to get involved this year.
Want to know more about the event? Check out this interesting story about "A Day In The Life of TNR" from Stacy Mantle.
Then visit Alley Cat Rescue, Alley Cat Allies or Altered Tails to learn how to manage feral cats in your neighborhood.
Start Talking!
* Ask your local shelters and pounds if they have programs for feral cats. Tell them you support humane standards of care for outdoor cats. * Tell your local elected officials that you want the animal control system to be held accountable. * Tell everyone you know that it's NOT okay to kill healthy animals. * Spread the word about National Feral Cat Day on October 16. |

Pet's 10 Commandments
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet I choose not to do so.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so..

Greetings!
Greetings fellow pack member! It was great to hear back from everyone following our last newsletter, and we hope our pack is having a great end to summer. Fall is nearly here, with the holidays quick on its tail. We have just returned home from SuperZoo with lots of amazing items for review, giveaways and - if we can get our "pack's" store open by the holidays - for purchase. Here's a quick sniff of the cool products we saw: freeze-dried stingray tails (doggy treats), a line of products from BedHead designed just for pets ( PetHead), handcrafted holiday decorations, climate-controlled pet carriers, Furniture Fur Removers, inexpensive and AMAZING pet beds (finally one big enough for my monsters!) from Orange County K9, and some unusual (but very cool) products like bath salts for dogs, a very cool cat hammock (the cog LOVES it), and all-natural treats for all of our pets. Besides all of the barking good products we saw, there were some other interesting things going on... Not the least of which is this poodle, who was groomed with nothing but a stripe of it's own fur to look like
a giant snake wrapped around the body. The groomer then painted
the fur to look like a snake. (I guess on some level it's better than dressing the dog up or wrapping a live boa around the dog). This week, we have lots of interesting news, videos and "special days" for you. We are currently sorting through the greatest products, writing reviews, and hope to get them into your hands. Speaking of products, keep in mind that Four Paws Pimple Ball Toy has been recalled. If you have any of these toys in your home, remove them immediately. Also - remember that the average shelf life of pet food is one year. If you have any old food in your home, discard it and replace it. When you buy new food, remember to check the labels. Many of the recalled foods were never removed from the shelf, so be careful out there and remember that China is currently in the grips of a melamine crisis. Try to avoid any foods or treats that are manufactured outside of the US and if you do use them, do your homework. We don't want to lose anyone else... Meanwhile, check out our latest: A very special recognition to Dr. Deborah Wilson - the founder of Circle L and Circle M Ranches and active animal advocate. On top of being featured in this month's issue of Cat Fancy in an article by yours truly entitled, " Through The Years", she was just recently awarded the Annual Animal Choice Award. Dr. Wilson is a wonderful person who is responsible for assisting
myself and a neighbor in our neighborhood TNR. Thanks to her, we have
succeeded in trapping and sterilizing 17 adult cats, 38 kittens and
adopting out 15 of those 38 kittens.
PetsWeekly couldn't be more proud to call her a friend and we hope
you will congratulate her the next time you see her! Read the press release now. Also remember to check out November's issue of Cat Fancy for our new article, " Through the Years". Remember to adopt rather than buy, and folks - if you have an OUNCE of space in your home, please consider fostering or adopting one of the millions of pets who are homeless due to the economy, the weather and the irresponsible nature of humans. The shelters are filled to the brim and we need a lot of help... Enjoy today's read. We're trying hard to get this out every two weeks, but as you know - it's a lot of work and very time consuming. So - bear with us as we muddle through. The bad economy has impacted everyone and we have to work harder than ever to feed the pack, just as you do. This may result in later emails and product reviews as we continue working our day job! But, rest assured, we're here for you and will be touching base throughout the month.

Hiring A Pet Sitter
Are you planning a vacation? If so - you may be on the hunt for a petsitter and good ones are hard to come by (just try finding one to watch your coyote and 17 semi-feral cats!). We have several great sitters in Arizona that we can recommend, but if you reside elsewhere in the country, or in the UK, please refer to these resources. They also offer tips on preparing your home and pets for time away. Check out PetsWeekly for a form you can use to provide information on your pets and make for a smooth time away.

New Strain of Parvo Virus
According to the AVMA, there is a new strain of Parvovirus known as CPV-2c that popped up in Italy in 2000 and has since migrated to the US. What's frightening about this is that there is no vaccine available to fight this strain, and the previous vaccine is not reliable. Canine parvovirus type 2b (CPV-2b) is the most common variant of the canine parvovirus in the United States, but CPV-2c is becoming the second most common variant. As with other parvoviruses, CPV-2c is highly contagious and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated feces (stool), environments or people. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs.

Hot Spots and Itching
Summer almost always results in a few "hot spots" and if you're like us, you have at least one dog or cat that ends up an itchy mess all year long. We've discovered a few ways to deal with this problem and we want to share them with you! 1. Ask the Vet: Your pets may be suffering from summer allergies or food allergies. If either is the case, your vet can diagnose the problem much faster than you! 2. Food Allergies: Grains tend to cause a lot of problems in our pets, specifically in cats (who are obligate carnivores) and dogs (omnivores like us). Ensure that your food is "grain-free", stay away from wheat, starches, and other fillers. We recommend Life's Abundance or Blue Buffalo brands, but there are MANY quality foods out there. Do the footwork to ensure your pet is eating correctly. 3. Seasonal Allergies: There are many ways to offset seasonal allergies, but you'll want to be sure to talk to your vet before you try them. Some of the options include: - Corticosteroids
- Antihistamines
- Anitbiotics
- Homeopathic Remedies
- Flea and Tick Control
4. Pests: Bugs and insects can cause a lot of strange reactions in our pets so it's very important to get any potential bite or sting looked at right away. Of course, you should always have your pet evaluated by your veterinarian.
