New! Basic Grey Goes Exotic
|
|
From Basic Grey, this five-page "olio" rub-on book from their new Marrakech line. Olio as in "a collection of various artistic works" and not the ol-e-o you spread on your sammy or what the flying monkey's sang in The Wizard of Oz. Dramatique and exotique, a spicy addition to your artwork. You can find these in the Necessities section of the shoppe and, oh yes, they are a necessity.

Also new from Basic Grey is their Porcelain line which has "Marie Antoinette" written all over it. This five-page book of rub-ons shows a softer side in lovely watercolor-inspired colors. Perfect for your French or Victorian-style pieces. Again, a necessity and found in Necessities.

A Poetic Journey

A new project in the PaperWhimsy Art Forum
|
"A little stone door to my mind Opens and shuts with a musical sound..."
Announced on the 14th in the PaperWhimsy Art Forum - our new 2009 Quotes Challenge.
Through the rest of 2009, we will be taking a journey through the wonderful poetry of child poet Hilda Conkling, putting her whimsical and often wistful words to pictures.
With the announcement of each poem will come the "challenge" along with a coordinating limited edition collage sheet to use in your artwork. (Yep... it's free to Art Forum members who are participating in the challenge, if you don't want to join the Art Forum you can purchase it here).
What a great way to spend 2009: meet new people, get a bunch of free digital collage sheets, create some wonderful collages and end up with a one-of-a-kind collection of illustrated poems. For more information just drop me an email. I hope you'll join us on this adventure or any of the other projects that will be hosted this year in our forums.
"Through the lacework of stone Comes a sweet melody saying Happiness... purity... strangeness..."

Good Reads
|
|
Just added a few new books to my library and thought I'd take a minute to share them with you. Definitely good reads for collage/mixed media/paper puppet/assemblage-loving geeks like me... And something for the camera geeks (like me, as well).
Paper Puppet Palooza is a hoot. The puppets are fun and funky with patterns included and enough information to set you on the road to paper puppet making nirvana. Front and back covers of this book have full color puppets on heavy stock to cut out and assemble if you're of a mind to cut up the front and back covers of your book. Lots of different styles of paper puppet.

Collage Journeys is a big WOW for me. Perfect for the mixed media artist looking for inspiration. Beginners will find lots of instruction; those artists who have been working in mixed media for a while will find great art and ideas to sink their teeth into. I am heartily glad I added this book to my library.

I am always in search of digital photography how-to books and was delighted with Rick Sammon's Digital Photography Secrets. This book is soooo easy to read and Rick Sammon is such a great teacher (I've taken a couple of his online classes through Kelby Training). The book is broken up into one-page "chapters" about all manner of things pertaining to getting the good shots. You can pick it up and read a one-page lesson in 10-minutes or less. Lots of tips, tricks, secrets from a great photographer and a very funny guy.

Now 'tis time for me to get back to creating and I hope you're thinking the same thing. There is nothing like feeding your creative soul with a good dose of art and I always hope that something in my little newsletters sparks that desire to create.
But before you dash off to enjoy the rest of your lovely Sunday, I'll leave you with a little dose of funnybone juice.
Until next time...
Blessings, Gale
