... because my slippers are so gorgeous.

THE Slippers

This Christmas I was gifted with not one but TWO pair of *pink* slippers.  A pair from my hubby and a pair from my son, Phillip.  And as you all know, I am a fervent supporter of Pajama Days so a pair of pink slippers... nay TWO pair of pink slippers is like giving me a pair of pink Manolo Blahhhhhniks.  Except the "Blahhhhs" are not fuzzy so much of their appeal is lost on me.

These fuzzy slippers are so wonderful even my postman complimented me.  "Wow!  Those are some big slippers, lady".  Aw shucks. (And yeah, I've gotten over my shyness and I answer the door in me PJs, now).

But what's with this thing I have for pink, now?  Where did that come from?  I don't ever remember being a pink person but suddenly, in my middle years now I'm a pinkster?  And, not only do I suddenly love that prissy, girly hue, I've also started collecting dolls.  Not baby dolls but FASHION dolls.  Dolls that wear things other than pajamas.

I promise you, though, Girl Scout's honor, no matter how deep into my middle years I venture and no matter how much I love my dolls I will never ever ever carry my dolls out in public (wearing my fuzzy pink slippers and pajamas).

Ahhhh... life is grand, isn't it?  There are all kinds of new interests and surprises out there just waiting for us to find them.  Like pink and dolls and ... needle felting!

Oh, but you must join me in this new addiction.  I have discovered needle felting (even though it's been around for about a billion years) and I am rabidly looking for new fibers and yarns and embellishments to add to the newest part of the PaperWhimsy shoppe:

FibreWhimsy!

But before you wander off there's more to tempt you here ... we're celebrating Paper Dolls in this issue.  We're going to meet up with an amazing artist, Traci Williams, who is going to share her terrific tutorial on how to construct our very own paper doll on a wire form.  Thank you so much, Traci!

Rande is also going to be tempting us with her new art.  She's been working diligently away at her art table creating some great new pieces to share with us and, Rande?  Did you mention something about... needle felting?  Did you hear that?  She said, "YESSS!"

So hold tight.  Hang on.  Stay tuned.  Let's have some fun today!

Hugs, kisses and warm wishes for a lovely pink fuzzy artsy felting paper dollery day!

A Fond & Sad Adieu (for now)

I wanted to share with you that last month our dear Lucinda Morse decided to step down from the PaperWhimsy Design Team so that she could spend more time with family and setting up her new home in Memphis.

I don't know if you were aware of this but we would not have a PaperWhimsy Yahoo group as we know it today if it weren't for Miss Lucinda.  It was her idea to start the group.  And it was Lucinda, with Peggy Gatto's help, that got the ball rolling and kept it rolling in a very elegant and enthusiastic fashion.

It was also Lucinda's idea to put together a Design Team, something that I had never considered because I wasn't aware that there was such a thing.  And Lucinda was the first person I turned to, to join my new Design Team, because she is such an amazing and talented artist.

This really isn't a goodbye because Lucinda, with all the things she has on her plate right now, is just a phone call or email away.  And somehow, she always manages to know right when we (I) need her the most.  She's kind of freaky that way.  But I am so glad she's freaky like that because she has been my anchor for well over a year, now.

Lucinda, thank you so much for all that you've done and for the manner in which you did it.  Lovingly, tirelessly, enthusiastically, with humor and grace.

Move fast, love.  Your fans await you!

 Isn't it Romantic

Yeah, I know that you've just barely swept up the evergreen needles, but doggone it, Valentine's Day is just a hop, skip and a romantic leap away!  And with Valentine's Day comes... PINK?  Needle felting?  Well, probably.  But ,also it comes with the opportunity for us to make those pretty little Valentine's doodads much like the ones we did as a kid.

If you haven't taken a look at the NEW part of the old PaperWhimsy then you've missed seeing all those pretty German Dresden foil ornaments and trims I've been adding.  In PINK and red and turquoise and white and gold and silver.

Yep, really from Germany and made from the molds that created these very same designs over a hundred years ago.  These pretties are a feast for your eyes and will make all your Valentine art or any kind of art, for that matter, sing!

So, here's a peek for now and to see more... well, you know the drill  :o)

 And a Little More Romance...

Hey, look what we made!  Because of Debby Harriettha's amazing fan package decoration featured in last month's newsletter, Rande Hanson, Bev Froese, Theresa Martin and I put our heads together and created a fan of our own... well, mine... okay, not for me.  We created a fan because Theresa is heading up a project in our PaperWhimsy group this month (Surprise, members!) creating romantic fans in celebration of the season of love... and we wanted a template.  Not bad, eh?

If you aren't a member of the PaperWhimsy group (we're in the process of moving to new digs at http://www.paperwhimsy.com/forum/) come on and join us.   This project is just one of many in the works for 2008.

 Meet Traci Williams

Traci Williams Feather DollSeveral months ago I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing artist.  It's always such a thrill to discover a talent whose art just sings for you.  Traci "claims" that she is new to mixed media, but to look at her work you'd, no doubt, disagree.  She is pretty darned talented for a newbie.

I met Traci through my shopping cart :o)  She placed an order with me and in her comments she wrote: "Hi, I'm Rande Hanson's little sister".  Well, how can you not love an intro like that.  Who's Rande Hanson

I thought it would be fun for everyone to meet Traci and get a peek at her wonderful art.  And along with that pleasure how about a great tutorial for making Paper Dolls written by Traci!  I mean, who doesn't love Paper Dolls?  (Hint to the PaperWhimsy Group but I shall say no more).

So without further ado... Howdy, Traci!

What is your sign :o)?

I am a warm-hearted, loving but sometimes stubborn and determined Taurus.

When is your first recollection of wanting to be an artist?

I don't think I ever wanted to be an artist I just was.  I have been doing something artistic for as long as I can remember.  When I was young, I would hold on to my weekly $1.00 allowance until Saturday, when we would go into town to shop.  I then would immediately go to the 5 and 10 to get a paint by number set (Oh goodness, my age is showing).  I would have it all painted before the weekend was over and eagerly awaited for the next Saturday to roll around.

What types of media have you worked in?

I love drawing with pencils, blending colors with oil chalks, dabbling in water colors and I love working with fabrics.  I even had a phase where I could not get enough of Plaster of Paris figurines, wall hangings, and ceramics.  I also have done paper Mache, decoupage, some leather tooling, and of course my new love, altered art (I can also knit a mean sweater!).

When did mixed media start to interest you (this question if you didn't start off in mixed media)

Well, as most of you know, Rande Hanson is my big sister.  I have been watching her do mixed media for years and, in my opinion, her work is absolutely beautiful.  Looking at her inspirational works of art, and with her urging to give it a try, I decided to just jump in one day and go for it.  The rest is history.

What is it about mixed media that calls to you?

Just that, its mixed media.  You can let your imagination run wild.  There are no rules.  One can create without the worry of boundaries...and there is no such thing as a mistake.  What's not to like?

What are your muses?

I can't really say that I have any one muse.  I could be anywhere doing anything and all of sudden an idea just pops into my head and I run with it.  Sometimes I will just have one item that I really, really like and then will work a project around it.  At times, I will see beauty in things where most people would not and turn it into a piece of art.  So if I had to choose, I would have to say my muses would be anything that is beautiful in my life, which in turn, can be expressed through my art and shared with everyone.

If you're in an artistic slump what pulls you out of it fastest

Admiring other artists work.  There are so many talented artists that create the most beautiful pieces, how can one not be inspired?

Who are your favorite artists?

Again, being relatively new to this, I have yet to discover all the different and wonderful artists that are available.  However, I do have a very favorite book, "Vintage Collage for Scrapbooking", that I picked up on a whim and just love all the ideas and inspiration that it offers.  The author is Jill Haglund and I just love her vintage art ideas.  It was her book, as a matter of fact, that I got the ideal of the wire form for my paper dolls.  I plan on getting many more of her books in the near future to keep my inspiration going.

What is your favorite TV program?

Oh my, I can't just pick one but, I guess, I can't name them all either.  At the top of my list I would have to say, CSI Miami, Law and Order, ER, and for a little comedy, Two and Half Men.

What is your dream vacation?

Well, in my dream I would be on a warm beach with my toes dipped in the most beautiful clear blue water, working on my best tan ever (without burning or fear of cancer).  In that same dream I would also be about 24, a size two and look great in a swim suit.  AHHHH but then it is just a dream vacation now isn't it...lol

What five items must you have on your art table?

My Tacky glue, Tim Holtz Scissors (they are the best!), a Distressed Ink pad, metallic pens and of course PAPER!

What color will we see in every one of your pieces?  I love earth tones so I love working with browns and golds, but I do try to slip a little something in that is red.  Red is my favorite color and it so bold, vibrant and a very happy color.

What is your favorite piece?

Because I love Christmas so much, and it involves my favorite color red, I would have to go with any of my holiday projects.  Two stand out for me.  My Christmas Doll that I made for the holidays this year, using a beautiful Paperwhimsy image, and I also finished a Christmas Altered Paper Bag Book (started in 06) as well.  I just love both of these projects and they both can be seen on my Flickr page.

What plans do you have in your art future?

I love being creative, but lets face it, I can't keep everything I make and my friends and family will only tolerate so much of my art.  I would love to eventually find my special niche, whether it be just ATC's, collages, or paper dolls, become very good at it and sell a piece or two.  If I am able to accomplish this then I will consider my art as a success.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that another person can see your vision and is joyful to have it as their own.  What a great way to share the beauty that I see in everyday life.

What favorite recipe would you like to share with us

(preferably a dessert :o)?

My husband and I are always fighting our weight and therefore look for great recipes

that won't pack on the pounds.  We both love Apple Cobbler and Weight Watchers®

has a great recipe.

This recipe serves 4 (and is only 4 points per serving for you fellow Weight Watchers®).

4 apples, peeled, cored and sliced

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

¼ cup low-fat buttermilk

2 tablespoons sugar

¾ c reduced-fat buttermilk baking mix

½ teaspoon ground cardamom

1. Preheat the oven to 350° F; spray a 1-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

2.  In a medium saucepan, combine the apples, 1 tablespoon of the sugar and the lemon

juice; bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat and Simmer, stirring constantly, until the apples

are soft, about 5 minutes.   Pour into the baking dish.

3.  In a small bowl, combine the baking mix, buttermilk, the remaining tablespoon of

sugar and the cardamom; stir until smooth.  With a spoon; drop the batter over the

fruit.  Bake until browned, 20-25 minutes.  Serve Warm.

Thank you so much, Traci!

Cindy Morse:
Words, Paint and Other Such Blessings

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

Do you know who said that?  It was John Lennon and he certainly defined a basic truth with that one.

While I was busy-busy-busy scheduling 2008, filling my time slots with ideas and due dates for the Design Team, Life took one of those wholly unpredictable turns - you know the drill, the "Surprise! You're on!" cues that come to all of us who play multiple roles.  When you have been blessed with a large family, many good friends, a rewarding (but demanding) profession and a variety of other commitments, occasionally your time is not entirely your own... which is how I found myself in mid-December asking Gale to please release me from my Design Team commitment.

Gale was - as you would naturally expect, knowing her -- unendingly understanding and gracious about it.  She is a good friend and, since she knows my life on a day-to-day basis, she wasn't even terribly shocked by my decision.

Suffice it to say, there is nothing catastrophic happening, but the bottom line is that my 2008 is not going to be the kind of year when the Design Team can command the time and focus from me that it so richly deserves.

Being asked to be on the first PaperWhimsy Design Team was such an honor; working with Rande and Gale for the first quarter was both a privilege and a pleasure; resigning is simply a necessary evil.  But as Gale says, "It's just a blip" in the road and we all go on.  Life happens.

Thank you to each of you who posted comments to my blog and emailed me directly with words of support for my work.  Creating with, and for, Gale is a joy and I look forward to more Paper Whimsy art in a less official capacity.

Blessings, Lucinda

Inspirations 2 Art

Rande's Sneaky Peek

I hope everyone has started the New Year with lots of new ideas.  With all the new collage sheets and products, there is plenty of inspiration for any project you might want to try.  And now is the time to start thinking of those special loved ones, with a very unique hand made Valentine.  I will have several samples of cards, and also a Valentine collage on my blog.

We are working on more creations to carry on the paper doll theme.  The doll may be paper, but you can still add lots of fabric, ribbon and bling to make them spectacular.  I will be adding several designs over the next few weeks to my blog.

If you still haven't found something to inspire you for the New Year, maybe a little hand felting would spice up some of your creations.  Jump in with me, and let's learn a little more about this fun technique to add a little bit of the unexpected to our work.  I have incorporated a little felt heart in one of my Valentine Cards.  It only takes a few minutes, and will add so much dimension.

While you are creating, I recommend putting in one those much loved romantic chick flicks, like Sleepless in Seattle, or one of my favorites, Frida based on the life and love of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

Warmest,

Rande

M-I-C (see you real soon) K-E-Y (Why?  Because we like you...)

And so a close to yet another newsletter.  It's been so lovely having this opportunity to chat with you a while and share things that excite and inspire me.  Hopefully, you'll walk away from your computer feeling a bit inspired, as well.

So here's looking forward to a lovely day and warm wishes for a beautiful January filled with cozy fires, hot cocoa, good books and a basket of needle felting.

And to those of you who are so patiently awaiting the arrival of your orders, I thank you.  My end of the month sale knocked those pink slippers clear off, but it's looking very promising that, by mid-week, I will be caught up.

God's Blessings to everyone,
Love, Gale xoxo

Bye for now
