Greetings!
Happy Holidays! We at MusicMakers wish you and your family a most joyous, safe, and miraculous holiday season! Our Master Classes and Parent Workshops in November were amazing! We had a LOT of students and their parents participate. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. We are busy getting our new home ready for you, registering for the Spring semester for private lessons, preparing holiday concerts in house and in the community, registering for Mini-MusicMakers in 6 locations, and registering for our February Performing Arts Workshops. We hope you will help your children to partake in the December Music Money activity. We are hoping that this will give you another opportunity to bond as a family! We can never have enough of those memory-making moments! We also hope you will attend a concert with your children this holiday season. For some ideas, please see the article below. Enjoy the newsletter...if you should have any questions or comments, please let me know! Happy and Safe Holidays to All! At your service always, Paula Penna, MMed., BMus. December Mu$ic Money Activity: Family Concert Time!
|
Wow, did we give out a LOT of November Mu$ic Money! Congratulations to all! Many of you already redeemed your Music Money for goodies, and we hope you enjoy them.
For December, we would like our students to perform a music concert for friends and family:
1. Choose at least 3 songs to perform on your instrument, and work on these with your teacher.
2. Create a written program (hand written is fine, and for our youngest students a drawing for each song is fine)
3. Perform your songs for your friends and/or family members.
4. Take pictures!
5. Print out your favorite picture and bring it in with the Mu$ic Money form at the bottom of this email. Bring the form and your picture in to your teacher, who will sign the form for you. Submit the form to the office. This activity is $100! Due date is January 5th (a little more time in case you are doing your concert on Christmas or New Year's!)
Remember to complete the form at the bottom of this newsletter and have your teacher sign it, then return to the office in the black mailbox next to the office door.

Musical Things to Do This Month: Attend a Choral Concert to Celebrate the Holiday Season
|
There are several choral concerts, including Messiah concerts and sing-alongs, to choose from this month.
If you have not attended a live Messiah concert, you don't know what you are missing! No, it isn't attending something with the excitement of a rock concert; but it offers a different kind of excitement--celebrating life, being moved to your soul-level by the glorious sounds, sharing true community experience with voices joined in song, and at the same time introspectively focussing inward, truly feeling what is really important in life.
Handel, a famous Baroque composer born in 1685, wrote the 250 page Messiah (all 3 parts) in only 24 days (by the way, it is Messiah only, no 'The')! It is a gorgeous, uplifting oratorio (a large composition of liturgical music with choir, soloists, and orchestra). Everyone knows The Hallelujah Chorus (Hallelujah! Hallelujah!). It is tradition to hold Messiah Sing-alongs during the Christmas season culminating with that famous piece (even though the famed Hallelujah Chorus is actually part of the Easter section!) It was first performed in Dublin, Ireland in 1742 to help raise money for a hospital. It is recorded that the King was so moved by that Chorus that he rose to his feet, a tradition which still exists today.
For a lovely history of Handel's Messiah, from Handel's experience, click here. For a more detailed, beautifully written history, click here.
The Association of Connecticut Choruses has a wonderful listing of choral concerts this season. Click here for a listing of concerts this December: Sing!It is interesting to note that Handel's father put him through years of schooling to become a lawyer, having ignored his extraordinary musical talent and refusing to allow him to take lessons for years!

INTRODUCING: MusicMakers Academy at The Victorian
Thanks to many of our students and extended family, the new Victorian is really shaping up! We have been busy restoring rooms and getting it ready for you.
While we were hoping to be in by December 1st, we are finding that we won't be in officially for at least a few more weeks. You will notice over the next few weeks that the "old" MusicMakers will be emptier and emptier.
We'll keep you updated!
Thank you for your help!
Through our students we have been able to rent our garage, clean up our yard, expand our parking facility, do lots of fix up in the house, and a whole lot more!
We are still in need of:
Snow Removal Grass Cutting Window replacement
And, bartering is an option!
If you know of someone, please have them contact Paula.

Practice Tip of the Month
|
|
Music is unique in that it is, at once, both an introspective art AND an extroverted practice of performing in front of people.
One of the best motivators for practice is knowing you have a concert coming up!
This month's Music Money activity of doing a Family Concert is perfect for motivation. Why keep it just for the holidays?
Plan informal concerts while making dinner, having friends over, celebrating a birthday, or any other special (or not so special) occasion.
Watch the practice and motivation get a great boost!
Go on to the MusicMakers website and use our online practice games! You can find the link on the home page!
