Achievers - To Thy Self Be True
The difference between personality and true self.
The Enneagram is a personality profiling tool that depicts that there are fundamentally 9 different types of personality held within all human beings that exist within modern society. One of those types happens to be the achiever.
Achievers, as the name might suggest are conditioned to get their reward from their achievements. They might have been a straight A student at school or had an extraordinary talent which brought them immediate acclaim in their youth be that on the stage or football field. In a way it doesn't matter how troubled or untroubled their overall childhood was, people paid them attention when they gained their next honour and this is what they learned they had to do in order to get attention.
The trouble comes however when this personality type stops achieving, or has to retire from doing the activity that they have got the acclaim for. Sometimes the persona that they have built up for themselves differs so dramatically from the real person beneath, that time spent without that acclaim becomes too much to bear and other hits of happiness are therefore sought as the depression starts to kick in.
The lesson all achievers have to learn is 'to thy self be true', for whether they are aware of it or not throughout all of that achieving they are deceiving themselves for they are not gaining their reward for their full self and who they really are. It is only by finding that true self and that authenticity within themselves and being appreciated for the complete person that they can ever be truly happy.
The trouble with modern society and certainly celebrity life is the majority of people project heavily on to the stars of stage, screen and sport, building people up into heroes and gods, something that they simply are not or no more than you or I.
Now if you believe in the Mayan calendar and can acknowledge that a new age of humanity is on the horizon, the age of Aquarius, where the Universe is encouraging us all 'to thy self be true'. It is conceivable that the achievers are currently feeling this shift in consciousness as much as anyone and the tension between who they have become and who they truly are is proving unbearable. Without sufficient help, guidance, compassion and understanding, sadly they are left with only one option.
