Feel Good Friday - Peak Oil
Week 22 2011
peakoil
Greetings!

Have you heard of the term Peak Oil? If not pay attention, for I believe this is the single most important issue of our time. It affects every business and every human being alive today certainly in the western world. However outside of the environmental movement I don't believe many people are familiar with the term.

Peak Oil is the theory that we are reaching the peak of global oil production, I would argue that we have actually gone past it. For as we approach and then crest the summit so fuel prices start to become more volatile and can increase very rapidly.

If you are a business or a home owner you need to be aware of this now, the increase in food and fuel prices (either transport or domestic) will continue to rise, this is not a passing phase. Every household, company or organisation needs to be aware of how vulnerable it is to continued oil price increases and what affect this has on related products, transporting goods from all over the world etc. Peak Oil can explain why foreign policy has been the way it has been over recent years, as when you read between the lines, all evidence would suggest that Peak Oil is indeed happening now.

There is hope however, hence this piece is written on Feel Good Friday, beyond oil we can hope for more resilient communities and economies, friendlier people, more engaged staff, inspiring companies and sustainable practices, if we all start to become more creative, innovative and productive in our approach to life and work and realise our true potential as human beings..

Please read on for more on Peak Oil or watch today's video for further inspiration.

Have a great weekend.

Kind regards

Simon

Peak Oil
How vulnerable are you to fuel price increases?

In 1970 Dr M King Hubert first published the theory of Peak Oil he told the American press at the time that as a country they were reaching the peak of their oil production, although he was positively laughed at there and then, in later years he was indeed proved to be correct.

He based his theory on roughly a 40 year time lag between peak discovery and peak production, stating that it didn't matter how much technology improved or drilling methods changed, the result was still the same, the time span remained constant. He had deduced that US oil discovery had peaked in 1930 therefore it was reasonable to presume 1970 would be where the US maximized its capacity in oil production.

With his same thinking he also deduced that global oil discovery peaked around 1970, so hence today...... oh dear, I think we maybe peaking and therefore very soon declining. Big problems for households and industry!!

Now it is not the fact that oil is running out that is the problem, there will always be oil in the ground, its just the fact that the age of cheap oil has gone. The easily extractable, more plentiful stuff.

All the way up to peak, supply matches demand, but when peak is reached demand then starts to outstrip supply and hence the prices start to rise rapidly. Oil will continue to be extracted but at a higher and higher cost until such a time where it takes a barrel of oil in fuel to get a barrel of oil out of the ground then production will cease with oil still remaining within the Earth, it just won't be economically viable to get it out.

Unfortunately for us there is nothing as rich in energy as oil or as efficient as a fuel source or with its multiplicity of use and so it will prove difficult to replace. Other fossil fuels such as coal could be used but bring with them more carbon emissions. Nuclear as we have seen recently has its own hazards and without oil to create the concrete to bury the radioactive waste, it begs the question what will we do with the fuel cells when they come to the end of their lifespan. Peak Uranium is rapidly approaching too.

Biofuels too bring a cost to other species and the environment and soon we shall have to decide as to whether we will have to plant our fields for food or fuel. Solar, wind and wave seem the best options but they too will have to be massively increased to even get close to what we have been able to produce with oil and that doesn't account for the oil needed to build them and maintain them. One thing is for sure as oil declines we shall have to increase our responsibility in managing its use.

Any companies or households, even societies dependent on oil as a fuel source or in the manufacture of its products and building constructs faces an uncertain future and needs to think of alternatives immediately, more sustainable alternatives. For it is clear that Peak Oil plus Climate Change does not equal business as usual.

Our future lies in creating more resilient, sustainable and local communities and economies, getting back in touch with nature and the people we live and work with and how best we can serve each other with more fairness and justice for all.
