Greetings!
In the depths of January it is sometimes difficult to find the inspiration we need to fire us into the year ahead and beyond. To be honest at times I too struggle to find the inspiration for this newsletter and my ongoing work, bar one ray of hope that continues to flicker in amongst all the increases of fuel and food price, approach of peak oil and climate change and the ongoing financial crisis, all caused by an unsustainable growth model that continues to hurtle us towards ultimate CHANGE!
The Children's Fire is an ancient way of decision making that used to lie at the heart of all what society came to debate upon. Today's video features Mac Macartney a fellow advocate of Authentic Leadership talking to a group of sustainability practitioners in Bristol about taking The Children's Fire to the heart of big business and the reaction he got when he got there, to find out more watch the video, or read on to discover what else the ancients had to teach us for our benefit.
There is hope, there is a still this fire that burns within us all.
Have a great weekend. Kind regards

Being in tune with nature
What the ancients knew but we have forgotten.
In our modern western world we perhaps have been guilty of dissing the ways of the ancient peoples of the past as somewhat primitive and uncivilized and in so doing have perhaps overlooked the basics of what is required to be truly happy within our world and understand what is of true value.
In a week where we have been hit with headlines about sexism and continued spending cuts from our boom and then bust economy, plus news of a national program to increase our levels of happiness as featured on BBC Breakfast, there is a lot to be learned from cultures that were more in touch with their true nature and therefore free of many of these problems,
The Native Americans made all their decisions by way of the Circle of Law their council where each seat representing an aspect of society had both a male and female representative. Giving a more balanced view on proceedings and greater respect within the community, a better way of relating to each other.
In the centre of their council there was always lit a fire or candle representing the children of the tribe and all future generations to come, no decision was ever made that would harm those children. Can you imagine what the impact would be on our world today if every business or organisation returned to a similar way of thinking where each decision was made with the best interests of the children at heart and whether the next action would leave the world in a better place for future generations to come, where the cleanest, greenest, most society enhancing possible solution was sourced, regardless of monetary cost.
Other notable aspects of tribal society and their council include the use of sacred speech where each individual is encouraged to give their own view on issues in turn and the rest of the council listen without interruption, so a more holistic view of any particular situation is gleaned rather than one or two individuals railroading proceedings, to push through other, perhaps hidden agendas.
Of course those individuals sat within the circle are likely to be fuller individuals too, sitting more aligned to their own true values, because they have been allowed to come into the world with very little influence from others, been given a beginning name suitable to their early character traits and have all gone through a rite of passage or vision quest to find out who they truly are as individuals before taking up any role within the wider community. Aspects and ceremony that in the main have been lost in modern day living.
So herein possibly lies a lesson for us all to learn to return to some thought processes and moral code more appropriate to living in harmony with ourselves, others (male, female and children), and the rest of our planet too if we are to live a happier and more sustainable, authentic life.
