The Theory Tested!

Ask the majority of people why they are unable to live the life that they want and they'll give you the answer that the latest six little balls that have been released from Arthur or Guinevere on a Saturday night as yet have not matched their Lotto or indeed their "Dream" Number.

As a life coach, I would usually tend to advise clients not to place such hopes on windfalls when the odds are so obviously stacked against you, in order to start making your dreams come true. Far better that you begin to connect with what is truly unique about yourself and make that your winning lottery ticket in life.

What then when you literally dream of winning the lottery? What should you do then?

Why I ask is that little over a week ago, I was beginning to ask myself what I needed to do next to supplement my income as I continued about my purpose. Then I had the dream and with it came the perfect opportunity to test Goethe's theory it seemed.

I remember watching in amazement as I matched 6 out of 7 numbers in the lottery and walked away with a cool £40K in my back pocket, all my imminent financial worries solved. Needless to say it was not a particularly pleasant experience when I woke up the next morning and realised that unfortunately that had not been the case!!

A moral dilemma ensued, to play or not to play, that was the question. Had my own self development turned me into Hurley from Lost I wondered (Oh no, beware of the numbers, man) or perhaps karma was about to play a trick on me even though my name wasn't Earl. What should I do??

I decided I had little to lose by playing, not having played the lottery since the initial couple of weeks back in 1997 when the novelty of picking six balls to win a few million soon wore off through lack of success. So there I was last Wednesday night 10 years on and arguably nearly £1000 richer in the pocket through not playing week in week out, armed with the 6 numbers from the dream, 6 numbers I would never normally have picked, all fingers firmly crossed.

Lancelot whirred away and the first number popped out.... to my amazement... IT MATCHED.... my heart skipped a beat... and I broke out in a cold sweat as number after number continued to roll out and I couldn't believe my eyes as my card began to fill up.... I HAD INDEED WON THE LOTTERY!!! Sadly, I fell 3 numbers short of my target and was £39990 lighter in the pocket than the dream. However, I was indeed a winner so worth doing perhaps?? Others of you maybe able to advise me further. This was the richest dream I had ever had and my own evidence perhaps of just what is possible when we do follow our dreams.

Goethe tells us to follow our dreams. Our dreams, intuition and experiences of synchronicity can all have profound affects on our destiny. By committing to the message we receive, all manner of things can start to happen for us for the better, when realising how this helps our purpose. In Goethe's own words:

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would otherwise not have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, of which no man could have dreamed would have come his way."

All we have to do is pay attention to what is happening in our lives in order to pick up the trail. To see where the door of opportunity is beginning to open and to have the courage to step through it. A lesson I am still learning as much as anyone else. My experience tells me though that the more times we can make that step, the happier our lives become.

Taking Responsibility

As we progress through our own personal development and wonder where our true purpose lies in life we should pay attention to where we think our true responsibility is at. What is it that we see in the world that needs changing either locally or globally, personally or professionally that only we have the power to do something about.

With my own purpose I don't seem to be able to get away from the fact that there needs to be an environmental element to my work, however much I get involved with personal development and corporate identity.

18 months ago I was introduced to the idea of Peak Oil. I have since written articles about it, designed various logos and leaflets for organisations raising awareness about it, helped arrange talks and attended lectures getting inspired by it and the type of communities that it can create for the benefit of all of us. Indeed it has featured more than once in these very newsletters.

Over the months I have begun to realise that all that was very well and good but who was taking responsibility for my own community, what was happening on my own door step, in my own home town. Who was best placed to help promote the idea locally.

With all my skills, it began to dawn on me that responsibility for this particular issue actually probably lay squarely across my own shoulders, and trying to gather enough other kindred spirits around me in order to make it really happen.

It seems as if instigating a Transition Town Ivybridge idea has been a long process, but gradually the right people have come on board, to help the project along, giving much needed support to myself. Special thanks with regards to this particular matter go to Tess, Carol, Gareth, John and Sally all good friends from my local environment group.

Synchronicity too is slowly playing it's part, helping with funding and training. Last Monday saw me stand up and present the idea for the first time to the local press & town council. A nerve racking experience for someone who is more comfortable working one to one rather than being centre stage. However I got through it and got the message across. It was hard, but I realised the buck stopped with me and it simply just had to be done.

As for future talks well synchronicity was at work again the next morning when there was a message in my inbox from the Plymouth Chamber informing me of a course on how I could make my presentations even better. Coincidence or not??


When Nature Calls

I believe that there are no coincidences in this life and everything happens for a reason. That's why we should pay special attention when something noticeable crosses our path. This can happen by way of a person, event or other more natural source of inspiration.

I believe even nature can help us in our quest if we allow it to. Part of the Walk of Life exercise I offer through my coaching is to go out into nature and ask it a question related to the problem we are faced with at the time.

During the walk all sorts of animals can cross our path or enter into our space. Together we can work out what they are trying to say to us either metaphorically or in real terms.

When searching for inspiration recently no end of unusual sightings of animals and birds have come into my circle. Notably Otters, Kingfishers and Dolphins. All urging me to communicate better and to enjoy the journey as much as the destination itself.


The Boldness of Transition
Transition Town

This week saw the 1st birthday party of Transition Town Totnes the initial Transition Town Initiative. One year on from unleashing the idea on the town there are now almost 200 initiatives up and down the country either involved in the process or mulling over the idea.

Evidence of what happens when a good idea is instigated for the benefit of all and how it can spread like wild fire when it captures the public's imagination. The boldness of Rob Hopkins original idea is surely as good an example as you are likely to find of what Goethe is talking about.

It has been a pleasure over the past 12 months to have helped the organisation as much as I have been able to do through the brand creation and publicity leaflets that I have helped design. Rob is an inspirational leader and seems to be one of a growing band of such figures that are stepping up to be counted just at the right time in our society. Neil Crofts (Authenticity) and Rebecca Hosking (Message in the Waves) being others to note and I have been fortunate enough to know or meet them all. Inspiring me on towards my own purpose. We all have this ability to bring forward our own personal leadership when the time is right. So be bold and vow to start making your own purpose count today.
