Let's rethink residential heating and cooling. Advances in applied building science in the US and abroad have resulted in homes that are so tightly sealed and insulated that furnace-less, ductless homes are now a reality.

The increasingly popular "Passive House" standard, for example, calls for insulation in walls and ceiling that is so thick that the home is actually heated by everyday activity of the occupants, from cooking to computer use. Even in ENERGY STAR-certified homes builders are now encouraged to bring all  ductwork inside the insulated envelope of the house to eliminate excess heat or cooling loss, and to use only small but efficient furnaces and air conditioners to avoid wasting power.

Geothermal heating and cooling, where piping loops are run through the ground to absorb warmth in the winter and cool air in the summer, are another option gaining broader acceptance.

Lots of options to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient!

10 Mistakes on Home Heating

1. Cranking up the temperature to warm up the house.

Cause: You come home in the middle of the day to a cold house. You want to warm back up to 68 ASAP, so you crank the dial up to 78 to get the furnace working harder and faster.

Effect: No time is saved in reheating the house. Most furnaces pump out heat at the same rate no matter the temperature. They just cycle on for a longer period to reach a higher temperature. The furnace will take the same amount of time to return to 68 degrees regardless of the thermostat setting. By cranking up the thermostat, you are likely to overheat the house past 68 degrees and waste energy. Just reset the thermostat to 68, make some hot chocolate, and wait.

2. Closing off vents in unused rooms.

Cause: You don't want to waste energy heating rooms you aren't using.

Effect: Again, this just wastes energy and makes your furnace run inefficiently because it changes the air pressure in the whole system. Experts recommend never shutting off more than 10 percent of vents. Sealing your ducts is a more efficient way to save energy.

4. Using the fireplace.

Cause: You found some free firewood on Craigslist and think you can burn up some free heating energy while enjoying a romantic fire.

Effect: While we can't make any promises about increased romance, we can predict increased energy bills. An open fireplace flue may suck more cold air into the house than the fire can radiate into the living space.

COLORED Stainless Steel?

YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.

Millennium Tiles would like to introduce you to the worlds only COLORED STAINLESS STEEL roof/wall tile system. By diffusing light rays on the surface of stainless steel with our proprietary light interference color (LIC) process, we can create a variety of colors that change with light but not with time. That's not all; if our tiles don't suit your design we can also color stainless steel in sheet form which allows for custom fabrication limited only by your imagination.

Feel Good About Deconstruction

Deconstruction refers to carefully dismantling pieces of a home or building in order to salvage valuable building materials. And it's a great idea for anyone looking to remodel this year as it saves valuable resources and money.

Why deconstruct?
There are many environmental benefits to deconstruction. Building debris accounts for one-third of the solid waste in the United States.

To give a concrete example, consider that one year's debris is enough to build a wall about 30 feet high and 30 feet thick around the entire coast of the continental United States. So, keeping reusable building materials out of the landfill means a lighter footprint for all.

Green Building Deconstruction

Since deconstructed materials are recycled and reused, the need for raw materials in new building projects is also decreased. You can often put the materials salvaged from your home right back into your new remodeling projects, or you can donate them to be reused in other projects.

In addition to being great for the environment, deconstruction can also mean cash in your pocket. Reusing old building materials will save you money on your remodeling project, and materials you donate can translate into a big tax write-off.

And we're not just talking pennies. In 2009, a family in Danville, Calif. recycled their 2,250-square-foot home and received a whopping $100,000 tax write-off. After donation to local nonprofit organizations, more than 80 percent of the home was reused. Read more...
