State Of The Union Jeff Symonds
West Coast Green, a conference focusing on "green"
home innovations and products, rolled into San Francisco's Fort Mason
last week intent on making our living spaces more
environmentally friendly.
There were presentations on topics such as water
efficiency and the future of Net Zero-rated buildings that
consume no energy and produce no carbon emissions.
Keynote speaker Van Jones, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C.,
and a leading advocate for the creation of green jobs, was the
greenest participant at West Coast Green. Jones gave his opening-day remarks over a
WebEx hookup.
But the real juice was on the trade show
floor, where classes, products and services were offered. This issue we offer some show highlights.

the planet Plastic. Walnut Creek's Green Sheds makes custom structures

$1,200 for a 3-by-4-foot shed (pictured) installed. (925) 872-3187. www.greensheds.net. |
Fall Home Prep Tips
In spite of the recent heat wave, fall is the perfect time to start prepping your house for winter. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests these 5 steps to ensure that your home stays comfortable this winter without costing you an arm and a leg.
1. Look for rebates from your utility or state. Recurve has put together a handy resource for available incentives. 2. Get an energy audit. In order to know how to save energy, you have to first find out where you are losing energy - and money. 3. Have your heating system serviced. Keep your system operating efficiently, and don't forget to replace your furnace filter once a month. 4. Find and seal your air leaks. This includes less obvious gaps such as recessed lights and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets. 5. Check your insulation and add more as needed. Insulation is often the most cost-effective energy improvement you can make in your home.
