Best Upgrades for any Car Stereo System.
The best way to improve your system is to start with a
sub and amp, then an amp and component
speakers. If you already have a full custom system and haven't had it
tuned, that might be the best way to take your system to the next level,
especially if you care about accuracy in sound.
Source Units
If you haven't yet changed the head unit in your car, maybe you don't need to. That's great news, right? Great sounding systems can start from humble beginnings and if the factory head unit can play CDs or has an AUX input jack for your iPod, it's a great place to start. Remember, factory installed head units in today's cars are considerably better in audio quality than 10 years ago. Plus, if you already have factory navigation and Bluetooth, why lose it? After all, you did already pay for that. So what do you do?
Add Bass
Many factory installed systems lack defined bass, at least that's one of the first things you notice. Many factory systems do not have a subwoofer, and the ones that do are mediocre at best. Adding bass can be a great way to extend the enjoyment and there are many options. A simple sealed or ported 8" or 10" subwoofer can do wonders with a modest amplifier of a couple hundred watts. There are also powered subwoofer solutions that have the amplifiers built right in so there's only one part to install and the amplifier power is already well matched for the sub. For refined factory system subwoofer upgrades, something like a JL Audio Stealthbox with a separate Class D or G/H, small footprint amplifier is an elegant way to add bass that is invisible in most cars and leaves little evidence of having been there when the car is sold or traded back in.
Add a 4-Channel Amplifier
After you've added a subwoofer, what is almost the next logical step is getting more power to the speakers already in the car. The factory head unit operates from an IC chip for power, as do most low power factory amplifiers. Adding an aftermarket amplifier with multiple channels gives you more power and generally gives some added features like built-in active crossovers so that you can limit some of the damaging low frequencies that might otherwise tear up door and rear deck speakers with too much bass.

JL Audio XD Series Amplifiers Big Bang Priced Right!
We wanted to include the modestly priced performer that is high on value but by no means short on style. (We can already hear people asking why the HD Series isn't here instead.) Anyway, one of the common problems with budget amplifiers is that they try too hard to look "cool". Teeming with fins, gills, and useless cosmetic ornaments, many entry level amplifiers look ill-conceived, hastily assembled and generally lacking in good taste. By contrast, JL Audio's XD Series of amplifiers has the totally opposite design philosophy.
