Amid ongoing tensions, UN urges Sudanese parties to prevent further violence

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has called on the Sudanese parties to defuse tensions in Abyei and Southern Kordofan state, following the recent fighting in those areas, and to prevent any further escalation of violence.

Violence and looting broke out in Abyei, a town contested by both north and south Sudan, after the northern troops took control of the area last month, displacing an estimated 45,000 people.

On June 3, the Security Council called on the Sudanese government to withdraw immediately from Abyei, stating that its military presence in the area constitutes "a serious violation" of previous agreements.

UNMIS said that looting is continuing in Abyei despite assurances from the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) that they would stop it.

"We urge the SAF to uphold its commitment and intervene to stop these criminal acts," the mission said in a statement.

The latest violence comes just weeks before Southern Sudan formally separates on July 9 from the rest of the country, following a referendum held in January.

"AIDS at 30: Nations at the crossroads," released on June 3 by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), comes ahead of a three-day high-level event at UN headquarters next week focusing on efforts to combat the epidemic.

"We have come a long way," added Michel Sidib, the Executive Director of UNAIDS. Highlighting the report's findings, he noted that about 6.6 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy in low- and middle-income countries at the end of 2010, a nearly 22-fold increase since 2001.

Also, a record 1.4 million people started life-saving treatment in 2010 - more than any year before - and at least 420,000 children were receiving antiretroviral therapy at the end of 2010, a 50 per cent increase since 2008.

Secretary-General appoints UN official to lead change management team

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he has appointed a senior United Nations official to spearhead efforts to implement a reform agenda aimed at streamlining and improving the efficiency of the world body.

Assistant Secretary-General Atul Khare will lead the Change Management Team (CMT) at the UN, working with both departments and offices within the Secretariat and with other bodies in the UN system and the 192 member states.

Announcing the appointment, Mr. Ban said the CMT is tasked with guiding the implementation of a reform agenda at the UN that starts with the devising of a wide-ranging plan to streamline activities, increase accountability and ensure the Organization is more effective and efficient in delivering its many mandates.

Mr. Ban said the CMT - which will work under the direction of Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro - would prove particularly vital as the UN works to strengthen its performance at a time of budgetary constraints and rapid global change.

World food prices set to remain high into next year, says UN report

Citing dwindling stocks and only small production increases for the majority of crops, a new United Nations report released today says world food prices are likely to remain high for the rest of this year and into 2012.

World's FarmersThe biannual Food Outlook published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that the next few months will be critical in determining how the major crops will fare this year, according to a news release issued by the Rome-based agency.

FAO's monthly food price index showed that global food prices, which earlier this year soared to levels seen during the 2007-08 food crisis, dropped by one percent in May.

Declines in the prices of cereals and sugar were responsible for the slight decrease in the May index, says FAO, adding that this offset increases in meat and dairy prices.
