Sudan: UN demands halt to fighting and troop withdrawal from Abyei United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the continuing escalation of violence in Sudan's disputed area of Abyei, as the Security Council called on the Khartoum-based government to immediately halt all military operations and withdraw its troops from the territory. |

Churkin. The Security Council said the taking over of Abyei by government of Sudan troops constituted a serious violation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005 to end two decades of civil war between the north and the south. The Council said the seizure of Abyei "threatens to undermine the mutual commitment of the parties to avoid a return to war and resolve all remaining CPA and post-CPA issues peacefully." "The members of the Security Council call upon the government of Sudan to halt its military operations and withdraw immediately from Abyei town and its environs," the Council said in a press statement. Mr. Ban deplored the actions of those responsible for shelling of the United Nations compound, an assault that wounded two peacekeepers, and demanded that the perpetrators be held accountable for the attack. "The members of the Security Council demand the immediate withdrawal of all military elements from Abyei and the full implementation of the Kadugli Agreement," according to the statement. Launched in 2006, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has since allocated aid to crises and emergencies in at least 82 countries.
The fund was created by UN member states to ensure that aid is available within hours of a crisis or emergency forming and to also support aid agencies operating in countries where emergencies have been under-funded.
"CERF is a proven life-saver," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as he welcomed the surpassing of the $2 billion mark. "When people are hit by disaster, there is no time to lose."
The fund is now the UN's sixth largest source of revenue for humanitarian appeals, and allocates an average of $400 million each year, drawing on donations from 122 countries as well as the private sector.

A famous royal hat to benefit UN efforts to assist children in need
The hat that launched a thousand headlines when it appeared at the British royal wedding last month sold for $131,000 on May 22 in support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). |
The hat worn by Princess Beatrice

The pale pink hat worn by Princess Beatrice to the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on April 29 in London - and which drew immediate criticism from countless fashion observers - was auctioned on the eBay website, with the proceeds to be divided equally between UNICEF and the Children in Crisis charity. Katie Morrison, a spokesperson for UNICEF UK, said that UNICEF could use its half of the proceeds to buy enough anti-malaria mosquito nets for more than 6,000 families, enough water pumps to provide 75 villages with safe drinking water or enough vaccines to protect nearly 70,000 children against measles.
