At six month anniversary, humanitarian needs of Haiti's quake survivors still immense

The humanitarian needs of people affected by January's earthquake in Haiti remain immense, United Nations agencies and their partners said in a new report, which also takes stock of the response effort and presents lessons learned from the challenging and complex emergency.

Haiti "Cash for Work" Participants Receive Payment"It is clear that the needs are still immense, and the challenges facing the response operation potentially daunting," said the agencies, which are members of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, the forum for coordination, policy development and decision-making of key UN and non-UN humanitarian partners.

"Foremost amongst these challenges is shelter - working with the government to identify durable solutions for the secure settlement of the displaced population," they said in the publication entitled "Haiti Earthquake Response, 6-Month Report," launched in Haiti on July 12.

More than 200,000 people were killed in the January 12 quake, 1.3 million more were left homeless and key infrastructure was destroyed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, and other areas.

In the past seven years an estimated 300,000 people have been killed and 2.7 million others have been displaced as a result of fighting between rebels and Government forces backed by allied Janjaweed militiamen in Darfur. All sides are accused of serious human rights violations.

UNAMID, has been in place since the start of 2008, succeeding an earlier AU-only mission in the war-torn region. Its headquarters are in the North Darfur state capital of El Fasher.

Security Council condemns recent sinking of Republic of Korea ship

The Security Council condemned the recent sinking of a Republic of Korea naval vessel, stressing the need to prevent further attacks both against the East Asian nation and in the region.

Russian Ambassador Vitaly I. Churkin with U.S. Ambassador Susan E. Rice.Forty-six people onboard the Cheonan ship died when it was sunk in late March. Seoul released the findings of an international report in May that concluded that the vessel was hit by a torpedo launched by its neighbor, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).

"The Security Council condemns the attack which led to the sinking of the Cheonan," the 15-member body said in a statement read out by Ambassador U. Joy Ogwu of Nigeria, which holds the Council's rotating presidency for this month.

It added that such an incident "endangers peace and security in the region and beyond."

New approach to HIV treatment could save 10 million lives, UN report finds

A new United Nations report says that a radically simplified approach to ensuring access to HIV treatment for everyone who needs it could prevent 10 million deaths by 2025 and 1 million new infections annually.

The so-called Treatment 2.0, says the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), could lower the cost of treatment, simplify treatment regimens, ease the burden on health systems, and improve the quality of life for people living wMichel Sidib, UNAIDS Executive Directorith HIV and their families.

"This means doing things better - knowing what to do, channeling resources in the right direction and not wasting them, bringing down prices and containing costs. We must do more with less," UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidib said at the report's launch in Geneva today.

The agency estimates that there were 33.4 million people living with HIV worldwide at the end of 2008, as well as nearly 2.7 million new infections and 2 million AIDS-related deaths.

It adds that only one third of the world's 15 million people in need of HIV treatment are accessing life-saving medicines.
