1 January 2012

Feast of the Holy Name

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I write as President of your Standing Committee but, more importantly, as a fellow sojourner in this vineyard of God's Kingdom, the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. Bishop Powell's decision to call for the election of the next bishop of our Diocese coupled with the findings and proposals of the Resolution 8 Sustainability Committee present us with a great opportunity and challenge. Please join me in praying daily for wisdom and patience as our Diocese seeks God's will and way forward.

The document below consists of guidelines regarding the formation of the Search/Nominating committee for the Diocese of Southwestern VA. Your Standing Committee believes that, at this point, we should initiate the necessary steps toward a timely election process following the Bishop's formal announcement at Council.  With the Search/Nominating Committee in place, we will be positioned to move forward as we determine best for our Diocese.

 As we embark on this significant journey in the life of our diocese, the Standing Committee has realized how important it is that the whole process be governed by an ethos of prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  Please know that we will continue to keep you informed. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me or anyone else on the Standing Committee.

Faithfully yours,

Tom Crittenden+

 President, Standing Committee

Bishop Transition

Diocese of Southwestern Virginia

Search/Nominating Committee (SNC)

January 2012

Ministry Description:

Service on this committee involves working with other members of the committee to oversee and implement the search and nomination process for the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. It will require a significant offering of time, service, and commitment. The work to be done requires strong faith, leadership, and confidentiality. The Canons of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia are silent as to the selection of members for the Search/Nominating Committee. The Standing Committee has determined, through prayerful research and consultation, that the below attributes will be helpful in guiding the selection of SNC members.

Qualifications, Skills, and Gifts for Committee:

  • Personal commitment to practices of prayer, service, worship and Christian formation;
  • Desire to undertake a spiritual discernment process with our diocese and work toward a common vision of ministry in the diocese;
  • Willingness to commit to prayer, to speak honestly and to listen carefully to the opinions of others, and to build an environment of trust;
  • Lay person who is an active communicant in good standing in the diocese or any clergyperson who is canonically resident in the diocese;
  • Familiarity with the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia and diocesan structures;
  • Willingness to maintain positive attitude;
  • Ability to gracefully work with a variety of opinions and theological perspectives;
  • Ability and reputation to maintain confidentiality;
  • Commitment to engage in this ministry for several hours a week throughout the process;
  • Conversant with computers and access to email correspondence regularly;
  • Able to attend overnight retreat on February 24th through the afternoon of Feb. 25th, 2012.

The committee will:

  • Include one lay and one clergy person from each convocation in the diocese;
  • Include 3-5 additional members appointed by the Standing Committee;
  • Have a chair chosen by the Standing Committee.

Elections to the SNC by each of the five convocations will be held at the 2012 Annual Council. The Standing Committee asks you to prayerfully consider whether you or someone you know would be a good candidate to serve on the committee and to then share those names with your convocation dean or president or a member of the Standing Committee. Feel free to contact a member of the Standing Committee if you have any questions.
