Calling All Gardeners!
|
The annual Sturgis Library Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 from 10 am to 3 pm on the front lawn of the Library. We will be accepting donated plants of all kinds -- perennials, annuals, shrubs, bulbs, trees, bedding plants, veggies -- as well as garden decor, tools, pots, and other garden-related items.
If you're dividing plants this spring, why not pot some up to donate to the sale? We'll accept donations any time after the first of June. Just bring your donations to the library during regular library hours. Or, if you have difficulty transporting them to the library, give us a call and we'll arrange for pick-up. Please mark your plants with any information you have about them -- name, color, growing conditions, size, etc.
We are also still looking for a few volunteers to organize and sell plants for an hour or two on June 9th. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, please contact the library at 508-362-6636 or email us at sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Upcoming Programs for Adults and Families
|
The following programs are coming up in June and July: June Get ready for History Along Route 6A 2012, a series of programs and events offered by the libraries and historical organizations of Barnstable Village and Yarmouth Port.
Saturday, June 16th at 2:00 PM
William Sturgis and the Oregon Question In 1845, William Sturgis of Barnstable was asked to give a lecture in Boston to explain "The Oregon Question." The decision about where to place the border between the U.S. and British Canada out to the Pacific Ocean was being discussed in the press, debated in Congress, and negotiated at the highest levels of two governments. Sturgis had visited the Northwest Coast on several occasions as a merchant mariner, and was the owner of most of the American vessels then active in the North Pacific. He was unique in speaking on behalf of the indigenous people of the Pacific Coast, and he suggested the border that was finally adopted. In this lecture, Dr. Mary Malloy of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, will introduce the role Sturgis played in this important episode of American History. The Oregon Question lecture, and the texts of three other lectures delivered by Sturgis to the Mercantile Library Association in Boston between 1845 and 1850, are included in the book, "A Most Remarkable Enterprise," soon to be republished by the Sturgis Library.
This event is part of History Along Route 6A, a series of historical programs in Barnstable and Yarmouth Port that runs from 6 to 16 June.
Tuesday, July 10th, at 6:30 PM Book talk with Josh Delaney author of the book Pieces of Eight
Set in the rich landscape of Colonial Cape Cod, this is the tale of the people and events that surround the eighteen-century wreck of the pirate ship Whydah. An impoverished washashore named Sam Bellamy realizes that his only chance for prosperity is to turn to piracy. But his search for fortune will take him away from his sweetheart, Maria Hallett, whose moments of apparent clairvoyance make the townsfolk wonder if she is a witch. Meanwhile, John Julian, a native man, follows the trail of the last wolf on Cape Cod. He is propelled by the belief that it is a messenger from the spirit world that will help him save the land he loves from the encroaching English. Joshua Delaney grew up in Eastham amidst the back roads and old legends of Cape Cod. Following his lifelong interest in history, he earned a Masters in History from Brown University. He also was a New England Press Association award-winning journalist for the Cape Cod Voice magazine. He still lives on Cape Cod where he scours the beaches and libraries, looking for arrowheads, artifacts and old stories. These programs are offered free of charge. We ask that you register in advance |

Cape Cod Vital Records Go Digital!
|
One of the most-used resources at the Sturgis Library is the 50-volume handwritten set of vital records entitled Genealogical Notes of Cape Cod Families, (aka the "Green Books.") The set compiles Cape Cod births, deaths, and marriages from a variety of publications into one resource. The information was assembled by three tireless and dedicated women in 1966, and the only print copy resides at the Sturgis Library. It is also available on microfilm.
We have been working with the Boston Public Library on a project to scan and digitize items from our collections, and the opportunity arose to have the set digitized at no cost through the BPL's grant-funded project. The digitized set now resides in the Internet Archive, and is available online for the first time to researchers doing Cape Cod research and genealogy.
To see and use this important resource, CLICK HERE and choose the volume you are interested in.
For those still interested in using the print version of this resource, the Green Books are back from BPL and available for use in the Hooper Room.
