Finding Your Roots

maggie
The producers of the PBS program Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. came for a visit to the Sturgis Library this winter to learn more about the Rev. John Lothrop, who is the ancestor of actress Maggie Gyllenhall.  The Sturgis Library was originally built in 1644 as a meetinghouse for Lothrop and his congregation.

You can see the show and a bit of Gates' visit and talk with Lothropp Family Foundation founder Helen Lathrop Taber at the following link:  http://video.pbs.org/video/2221947390.

Calling All Gardeners!

The annual Sturgis Library Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, June 9th from 10 to 3.
Please plan now to donate plants of all kinds -- perennials, annuals, shrubs, bulbs, trees, bedding plants, veggies -- as well as garden decor, tools, pots, and other garden-related items.

If you're dividing plants this spring, why not pot some up to donate to the sale?  We'll accept donations any time after the first of June.  Just bring your donations to the library during regular library hours.  Or, if you have difficulty transporting them to the library, give us a call and we'll arrange for pick-up.  Please mark your plants with any information you have about them -- name, color, growing conditions, size, etc.

We are also looking for a few volunteers to organize and sell plants for an hour or two on June 9th.  For more information or to sign up to volunteer, please contact the library at 508-362-6636 or email us at sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Cape Cod Vital Records Go Digital!

certifOne of the most-used resources at the Sturgis Library is the 50-volume handwritten set of vital records entitled Genealogical Notes of Cape Cod Families.  The set compiles Cape Cod births, deaths, and marriages from a variety of publications into one resource.  The information was assembled by three tireless and dedicated women in 1966, and the only print copy resides at the Sturgis Library.  It is also available on microfilm.

We have been working with the Boston Public Library on a project to scan and digitize items from our collections, and the opportunity arose to have the set digitized at no cost through the BPL's grant-funded project.  The digitized set now resides in the Internet Archive, and is available online for the first time to researchers doing Cape Cod research and genealogy.

We are now offering vintage postcards featuring images of Cape Cod and historic scenes with artwork by Frank Milby.  The images are from a series of 30 lifesize paintings done by Milby, which were at one time exhibited at the Pilgrim Theatre Museum in Provincetown.  The postcards sell for $1.00 each.

Notecards with watercolor images by Gerald Hazard are now on sale in the shop, along with notecards by Mary Richmond, Joyce Kevorkian, and Karen Crocker.  We also offer a selection of postcards and notecards with images of the Sturgis Library.

Exhibits and Displays

trade"Sport Fishing and Victorians," a collection of fishing tackle ephemera belonging to Dave and Nancy Dawson, will be on exhibit in the lobby display case during the month of May.  Dave and his wife have been collecting fishing tackle ephemera for the last 26 years.  The exhibit illustrates how fishing has developed from a "pasttime for loafers" into a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone.  The exhibit includes Victorian advertising trade cards, advertising for fishing clubs, colorful business trade cards using comical fishing scenes, and advertising depicting women dressed for sport fishing.  Dave is an ardent sport fisherman.  He and Nancy live on Mystic Lake in Marstons Mills.

Photography by Terry Boylan will be on exhibit in the Simpkins Room during the month of May.

There will also be an exhibit of miniature and little collectibles from the collections of the Sturgis Library staff in the lobby display case.

Do you have artwork, photography, sculpture, crafts, a collection, or other interesting items to exhibit?  Contact Lucy Loomis at 508-362-6636 or drop her an email at sturgislibrary@comcast.net

You can get more information about our exhibit spaces on our website.  To see a list of exhibits and displays coming up in 2012, check out the Now Showing page.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of exhibited art, photography, and crafts benefits the Sturgis Library.  Proceeds are used to enhance library services and programs.
