We're Thankful

thanksWe are so thankful for the generosity of our library patrons, volunteers, Board members, friends, and neighbors.  We'd like to say a special thank-you to:
  • The Friends of Sturgis Library, who provided funding for the beautiful new carpeting in the Hooper Room and Lowell Room.
  • Larry Mulaire, for refinishing the "Brazelton Table" in the Lowell Room.
  • Everyone who donated handcrafted items, gift items, and baked goods for our November craft sale.
  • Those of you who've donated items for our December ornament and decor sale.
  • All those who donate books and other items for our ongoing book sale throughout the year.
  • Our neighbors, for putting up with our building project over the last year.  We're just about finished!  Thank you for your patience!

In Memoriam

We are sad to note the deaths of two members of the Sturgis Library family.

Sheila Bearse Crowell passed away on October 15th, 2011.  Sheila was an active member of the Sturgis Library Board of Trustees, and a member of the Events, Building, and Nominating Committees.  She contributed to the Library in so many ways, from baking her famous chocolate cake for bake sales to selling tickets and promoting Library events.  Sheila's efforts, along with those of her husband John and daughter Kris, contributed greatly to the success of our Library. She was a vital member of the Barnstable Village community, and she will be greatly missed.

Dan McConnell died on September 13th, 2011.  Dan was an active member and President of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society, and keenly interested in the life and legacy of the Reverend John Lothrop, one of the founders of the Town of Barnstable.  The Sturgis Library was originally built as the meetinghouse for Reverend Lothrop, and Dan's extensive research on Lothrop helped to advance the scholarship on the early Congregationalists and their struggles for religious freedom.  We will miss Dan and his passion for our shared history.

We are grateful to everyone who has made a donation to the Sturgis Library in memory of Sheila and Dan.

2012 Reading & Discussion Series

Sign up for this winter's Reading and Discussion Series, "Intellectual Seeds: The Bounty of William Sturgis, Past and Present."  For this year's  Mass Humanities-supported series, we've gone back into our own past and selected four of the books that the Library's first patrons checked out in 1867 -- the year Sturgis Library first opened its doors.  The scholars will examine these books from both the contemporary context of post-Civil war Massachusetts and from that of today's readers.  What insights can you gain from the literary tastes of your village predecessors?  For the extra-curious, we'll provide a list of all the popular titles that the folks in Barnstable were reading, and we'll even order a few of the really obscure titles that were big hits in 1867.

Discussions will be held the fourth Tuesday of the month, January through April, at 6:30 pm.

cape cod24 January: "Silas Marner," by George Eliot, with Dr. Elaine Craghead

28 February: "Cape Cod," by Henry David Thoreau, with Anne Speyer

27 March: "The House of the Seven Gables," by Nathaniel Hawthorne, with Dr. Sam Coale (who's just published a book on Hawthorne and is working on another!)

24 April: "Richard II," by William Shakespeare, with Dr. James Crowley

To register, call 508-362-6636, email Antonia at sturgisreference@comcast.net, or drop by the circ desk.

The Changing Arctic

The Arctic Ocean and its Global Impact

Monday, December 5th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

The world's climate is changing, and the Arctic Ocean and the surrounding area are exerting considerable force on that change. This ocean is home to sea ice, glaciers, polar bears--and very few people.  It is known as the world's "air conditioner," and though it remains a frontier, it is recognized as the climate equivalent of the "canary in the coal mine." George B. Newton, former chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, will describe how the changing conditions in the Arctic foretell the changes the temperate world will experience.  This talk is free, but advanced registration is appreciated.  Please call 508-362-6636 or email Antonia at sturgisreference@comcast.net

Food-for-Fines

groceriesDecember is Food-for-Fines Month at the Sturgis Library

Here's how it works:

  • During December we'll be holding a holiday food drive.
  • If you bring in non-perishable food items, your fines will instantly disappear! (Sorry -- we cannot waive charges for lost or damaged books.)
  • Food items will be donated to a local food pantry.

Donations of food will be accepted even if you have no fines. So please give generously this holiday season.  Thank you!
