box

Calling all crafters, artists, and creative thinkers!

Get ready to think outside the box!

The Sturgis Library will be hosting a creative auction on June 26th, 2011, and we need your help.

Here's how you might participate:

  • Paint or decorate a box or container of some kind, and donate it to the auction
  • Find an antique box in a thrift shop and turn it into a modern masterpiece
  • Fill a box or container with fabulous things to be auctioned off
  • Paint a picture or take a photograph of a scene that includes a box or container
  • Donate items that might be put in a box
  • Or, think of something completely unique that might fit with the "Outside the Box" theme

The Library has a selection of unpainted boxes available at the Circulation Desk for you to choose from, or find your own and create a work of art! Tell your friends, tell your neighbors! All ages welcome to participate - why not make it a family project?

Donated items are being accepted now, through June.  We'd like to have all donations by June 17th, 2011.

We are also looking for sponsors for this event.  Sponsors will be listed in our publicity for the event and on our website.

For more information, call Lucy at 508-362-6636, or email sturgislibrary@comcast.net

New Monthly Mini-Auctions

fat quarterWe had a great response to our wine and lottery ticket silent auction in March, and we will be starting a series of monthly mini-auctions where library visitors can bid on an assortment of fun and useful items.  Auctions will run for one month, and the high bidder need not be present to win.

In May we'll be auctioning off two baskets:
  • A basket filled with an assortment of colorful and varied fat quarters of fabric (18"x22") prized by quilters for their sewing "stashes"
  • A May Basket brimming with items to brighten the spirit and celebrate spring

Do you have an item or service you'd like to donate to be auctioned off?  Please contact Lucy at 508-362-6636 or by email at sturgislibrary@comcast.net

All proceeds benefit the Sturgis Library, and are used to enhance services, provide programs, and preserve our historic building.

Staff Update

staffWe were pleased to see so many patrons, staff, Trustees, Friends, and volunteers turn out for Adult Services Librarian Marcella Curry's farewell party.  Marcella wishes to extend her thanks to everyone for making her time here at the Sturgis Library so rewarding.

Antonia Stephens, our new Adult Services Librarian / Assistant Director will be starting work here the last week of April.  Some of you may already know Antonia, who currently works at the Marstons Mills Public Library.  We're excited to have Antonia join our staff.

Circulation Assistant Kyle Damron, who has worked at the Circulation desk for over four years, is leaving us to become a Pilgrim interpreter at Plimoth Plantation.  We will miss Kyle's bright and energetic spirit, and wish her the best in her new job.

Lisa Hall Conway has just been hired as our new Circulation Assistant.  Lisa has been a volunteer and Trustee at the Centerville Public Library, and active in volunteer positions at Cape Cod Academy and other local organizations.  We look forward to having Lisa as a member of our staff.

Longtime Administrative Assistant, unofficial gardener, baker, Cookbook Club coordinator, and Sturgis Library cookbook editor Elizabeth Payne will be retiring at the end of June.  Elizabeth has worked at the Sturgis Library for over 10 years, and has done everything from assisting at the circulation desk to helping to coordinate events, organizing mailings of our annual appeal and newsletter, planting shrubs, paying bills, filing our taxes, and hundreds of other tasks throughout her 10+ year tenure.  We will be scheduling a farewell open house for her in June.

Upcoming Exhibits and Displays

May 2011 Exhibits

veiledArtwork by Lucilda Dassardo-Cooper will be exhibited in the Simpkins Room during the month of May.
Lucilda Dassardo-Cooper is an American artist of Indian and African ancestry who was born in the Caribbean island of Jamaica and has lived in the USA since 1971. Now a citizen of the United States, she has represented her country at India's 9th Triennale with paintings from her Veiled Presence Series of sari-clad women from the Indian sub-continent.  Since childhood, she has been "a seeker of wisdom and truth" which has led to her interest in philosophy and study of yoga, bringing a universal perspective to her art. Moving beyond traditional mindsets enforced by race, culture, national origin and religion, she muses on universal themes, employing cross-cultural symbols as icons in expressing her vision.

There will also be an exhibit of playing cards by Sam Noland, and shells and fossils by Ed Albino.

Do you have artwork, crafts, a collection, or other interesting items to exhibit?  Contact Lucy Loomis at 508-362-8448 or drop her an email at sturgislib@comcast.net.  You can get more information on our exhibit spaces on our website.  To see a list of exhibits and displays coming up in 2011, check out the "Now Showing" page.
