 Celebrating Mothers

At right, GAC's Ardwick, who arrived at Greyhound Adoption Center on April 16th. She was one of several greyhounds remaining from the closed Phoenix racetrack. Ardwick, who turns 10 years old in August, apparently was used for breeding following her racing career.

Celebrating Mothers of All Kind ...

Byrness and pups at GAC

Greyhound Adoption Center wishes a happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there ... our adopters who think of themselves as "moms" to their greyhounds ... and to all the greyhound moms.

Whether from the track, a shelter or a backyard, moms and puppies have needed our help along with the adult greyhounds, the seniors, and injured and ill greyhounds. Thank you for supporting us in helping them when they need it most.

Here are a few of the greyhound families we've cared for in recent years.

Byrness
Byrnee
Byrnee
Byrness (pictured above at Greyhound Adoption Center with her eight puppies and right) was one of seven adult greyhounds and greyhound mixes we rescued last June after Kings County Animal Control seized these dogs, and others, from an individual's property in Central California. Byrness (now Byrnee, adopted by Sandy Grindle of La Mesa) had her pups on May 22, 2009, nesting in a dirt dugout on the property. The canine family traveled down to GAC on June 2nd. Byrnee, a sweet and slightly shy girl, was a very attentive mom to her pups while at GAC.

Magic

Magic and Pups
Fuzzy Magic (pictured far right) came to Greyhound Adoption Center from an individual on July 12, 2008. Joining her was tattooed brindle greyhound Mystery, who we believe was the father to some or all of Magic's puppies who we subsequently took in: Merlin, a boy, and Morgan, a girl, who arrived July 27, 2008 (both shown here with Magic), and Mackey, another little girl who came on October 19. Magic was very fearful at our rescue center and compounded the challenge of finding her a home by being an escape artist extraordinaire.

After spending months in a foster home with GAC volunteer Lynnet McMahon, she was adopted by Judith and John Lown of San Marcos just this past November. Merlin (now LoJack or Jack) was adopted by John Johnson of San Diego, Morgan went to live with Brigitte and Scott Davis of Ramona, and Mackey to Leilani Lee of San Diego. Mystery was adopted by Jenny Carless of Santa Cruz.

Hope, now a little more than four years old, arrived a year before Byrnee and a month before Magic, coming to GAC from the Caliente racetrack on June 14, 2008, with greyhound Charity. We rescued her just in time. Two days later she had eight puppies!

Named for national parks, the puppies included: Boys: Bryce (now Denali), adopted by Justi Miller and Barb Smith of Minneapolis, MN; Denali,
Lisa Cusey and Denali

Tic Tac

Unlike Hope, when Tic Tac came to the Greyhound Adoption Center it wasn't immediately

apparent that she was pregnant. She came from the Caliente racetrack on December 30, 2006,  along with four other "mint" dogs. Upon examination, however, we learned she soon would have puppies. That came to pass on January 23, 2007, when two-year-old Tic Tac gave birth to five girls and two boys.

We don't know what happened to their mother. The group of five included: Goober, a boy, now Finn, adopted by Ann Calhoun of Los Osos; Pez, a girl, now Ridley, adopted by Sean and Elissa Maguire; Reeses, a boy, adopted by Candy Lewis and Darren Rigg of Lakeside; Spree, renamed Luna, a girl, unfortunately recently deceased, adopted by Chris and Kary Root of La Mesa; and Twix, a girl, now Mango, adopted by Bill and Betsy Olver of Orange.
