Leadership Institute Financial Aid Fund
Pay It Forward In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.
To make a donation to the Leadership Financial Aid Fund, or for more information, please contact Executive Director Frank McCune at 602.952.6760, ext. 1 or frank@valleyleadership.org. |

Leadership Institute Program Day 4 Re-Cap: Government
Hosted by APS on Friday, January 6, 2012, Class 33 discussed "Government and Public Policy" with a large array of speakers and panelists.
After an interactive teach-back presentation focusing on "Appreciating Constituents and their Diversity," the class spent the morning participating in discussions on the Arizona Budget with AZ Secretary of State Ken Bennett and Arizona's Judicial System with AZ Supreme Court Justice John Pelander. State and local politics were further discussed in the morning by panelists Charles Coughlin (President, Highground, Inc.) and Mario Diaz (President, Mario E. Diaz & Associates). Lunchtime featured newly inaugurated Mayor of Phoenix Greg Stanton, and the afternoon included two very lively panels that continued the discourse on state and local politics.
The first afternoon panel focused on Local and County Government and included Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Scottsdale Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane and Buckeye Mayor, Jackie Meck. The class later participated in a lively discussion highlighting State Legislative issues with Rep. Chad Campbell, Rep. Michelle Ugenti, Sen. Rich Crandall and Sen. Michele Reagan. Our last panel of the afternoon featured Rep. Ed Pastor and Rep. Jeff Flake and highlighted various topics in our Federal Government.
The final portion of the day entailed breaking into groups, where the class was mentored by a consultant on how to run a campaign for either an issue or a candidate. After discussing the scenarios, the class put together a campaign plan and, after reconvening into the large group, made personal campaign speeches. It was a full day and while we are not sure we resolved all of the issues found in the political landscape, we did all agree that we are capable of getting involved and making a difference.
Left: Class 33 member Brett Mecum presents his campaign speech. Right: Panelists Mario Diaz and Charles Coughlin discuss the current state of Arizona politics. |

ICAN Latino Advisory Council Seeks Members

ICAN's new Latino Advisory Council seeks leaders who can help meet the goals of ICAN to the Hispanic Community.
ICAN's mission is to assist and empower late-stage patients worldwide with cutting-edge information regarding anticancer drugs in clinical trials as well as physician referrals at the patient's request based on the patient's reported medical situation. ICAN takes the position that there are key decision points in the battle for life and without the best available information, the cancer patient will not be well-armed for the road ahead. ICAN assists the patient at such critical decision points in an effort to prolong life, taking into account quality of life and pain management issues. The ICAN patient finalizes all treatment choices with his/her medical team. Primacy is placed upon avoiding lost time and easing the transition between a patient's last set of diagnostic imaging (as well as lab tests) and the entry into either a clinical trial or a more creative treatment regimen.
Since its founding in 1996, ICAN has been at the vanguard of personalized medicine and in the trenches with patients encouraging the use of specialty laboratory testing on blood and tissue samples as well as discussing molecular profiling results - before the term "personalized medicine" came into vogue. ICAN views each patient case as unique, and has never seen two patients with the same subtype of cancer with identical molecular profiling results since the subjects of cancer and tumor cell biology are so complex.
Click here for more information on ICAN.
If you are interested in being part of this exciting team, please contact Isaac Avina (Class 27) at (619) 241-6191 for further information. Even if you are unable to commit to being part of the council on a regular basis, please consider other volunteer options such as working on an event committee or guest speaking.
