Pay It Forward In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.

Book of the Month | |

The Wisdom of Crowds
by James Surowiecki
Product description:
In this fascinating book, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant-better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future.
With boundless erudition and in delightfully clear prose, Surowiecki ranges across fields as diverse as popular culture, psychology, ant biology, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, military history, and politics to show how this simple idea offers important lessons for how we live our lives, select our leaders, run our companies, and think about our world.

Meet the Valley Leadership New Board Members and Staff
Valley Leadership welcomed several new board members and staff members for the 2011-12 program year. Get to know your new board members and staff each month:
New Board Member:
Amy Buchan, Apollo Group (VL Class 31)
Background: I serve as the Director of Strategic Partnerships in Corporate Social Responsibility for Apollo Group Inc. My role is to manage the community outreach in the Chicago market as well as nationwide nonprofit partnerships for the University of Phoenix and other Apollo Group entities. Some of my national and local partnerships include Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Junior Achievement USA. Our partnerships are designed to drive positive community outcomes in these areas and we are passionate about being an outstanding global citizen.
I have a degree in Journalism and a minor in Communications from ASU. I serve on the Board of Directors for Valley Leadership and Valley Youth Theatre as well as committee co-chair for Valley of the Sun United Way's Generation United and immediate past chair for Man & Woman of the Year Luncheon.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV, and currently live in downtown Phoenix.
Why you initially joined your VL class: I joined VL to learn more about my community and meet other like-minded people. I applied at the encouragement of some outstanding VL alumni. They were so passionate about the organization, so I figured VL must be doing something right!
Why you joined the Board: I joined the board because I believe in the work of VL and the contribution to our community. Chairing the 62nd Annual Man & Woman of the Year Luncheon reiterated what I already knew: from the VL staff and Board, to our alumni and teens, we have a motivated and passionate group who are committed to the success of the organization and the future of our community.
One big goal for the year as a Board member: I have two goals this year for my work with VL: 1. To continue the success of the Man & Woman of the Year Luncheon (which is VL's largest fundraiser - sponsorships are now available!). It's such an honor to work on an event recognizing inspiring members of our community, and it's such a joy to work with this year's honorees, Sue Glawe and Jerry Lewkowitz, and Event Chairs, Milton Dellossier and Sarah Finecey. 2. To engage our alumni. We have over 1,700 alumni and while we have a great number of alumni who are involved, there are so many folks who aren't. By taking the time to understand what people want to see from the organization, I hope we can get more alumni out at our tours, dialogues and other events.
How can VL alumni help you achieve your goals? Alumni can help achieve these goals by getting involved, attending events (another shameless Man & Woman of the Year Luncheon plug!) and by providing us with feedback on what works, what doesn't work and what sort of events you'd like to see. We have a great Alumni Chair in Jenny Holsman Tetreault, who works tirelessly to engage everyone. I know we're all busy, but I encourage you to get involved however you can.

Leadership Institute Program Day 3 Re-Cap: Media
by Chris Kotterman and Patty Johnson (Class 33)
The class participates in the group teach-back presentation on "credibility."
VL's Class 33 December Program Day offered an insider's perspective on the media, with a view into a changing medium and Arizona's top media outlets as they strive to modify their business model and remain relevant. The day took place at the Republic Media building in downtown Phoenix, which includes the Arizona Republic, Channel 12 and azcentral.com.
Class 33 enjoyed a rousing game of "Credibility Jeopardy" hosted by Chris Kotterman and got to hear the history of media in the Valley from current and former Republic employees. Guests ranged from editors and reporters to those who were instrumental in creating today's newest media outlets, as well as those being highlighted in the media.
Our hosts, Republic Media Services, joined us for much of the morning as we heard from AZ Republic publisher John Zidich and retired AZ Republic executive Bill Shover about the evolving nature of the media and how this outlet focuses on delivering quality news while generating a profit. The evolution is not unique to this outlet. Phoenix Business Journal editor Ilana Lowery and Campesina Radio personality Bill Barquin shared the challenges that their outlets face, including the challenges they have to also deliver a desirable product while generating revenue. Expect to see catering to niche markets and the delivery of more useful data moving forward.
As we transitioned to the Channel 12 TV studio, we were treated to a special (non-televised) presentation of "Sunday SquareOff" with Brahm Resnik, featuring AZ Republic reporter Laurie Roberts, political consultant Robbie Sherwood and AZ legislative representative Kimberly Yee. This panel talked much about transparency, but it was clear that definitions and expectations of transparency differed greatly among the panelists.
The afternoon was highlighted by a tour of the Republic/12 News newsroom, where we met Lin Sue Cooney and Mark Curtis and made a very brief appearance on the Valley's premier afternoon news show, EVB Live! The tour revealed a model that represents a truly unique approach to today's media delivery with the combination of a TV network, print media and online media outlet. This tour showcased the future of media, which offers an ability to deliver news instantly and coordinate across multiple mediums of information delivery.

Left: Class 33 member Helenmarie Mendoza Slater on a related program day class tour at KJZZ Studios on Dec. 15 Right: Class 33 members Vanessa Valenzuela Erickson and Josh Landers with Arizona Republic reporter E.J. Montini at the program day happy hour.
Afternoon sessions focused on strategy. We heard from some social media experts about how they use social media to benefit their clients and how social media not only offers new venues for engaging with the public, but is also an excellent provider of data about a target market. This likely explains why we see modern media embracing and investing significantly in social media strategies. Our day ended with a discussion on crisis communication, presented by John Godec, who outlined his recommended approach to a crisis: express concern; describe conclusion; provide supporting facts; repeat conclusion and end with a description of future action. Additional media training was provided by Cary Pfeffer, who also offered basic steps for successfully managing an effective media strategy.
Other highlights of the day included our business etiquette lesson, which was presented just before lunch, to offer a quick, helpful refresher. Thankfully, we are now prepared for a State dinner at the White House, informed on which utensils to use for each course and reminded how to properly shake hands and make introductions. Class 33 will represent Valley Leadership well as we embark on our leadership paths.
The day was a rapid tour through the state of media in the Valley today, and suprisingle enough, The Arizona Republic and all of its associated properties are a lot stronger than one might think in the age of the online explosion. The media is a powerful tool, and this day offered valuable insight to using it for advancing our leadership objectives.
