Pay It Forward In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.
To make a donation to the Leadership Financial Aid Fund, or for more information, please contact Executive Director Frank McCune at 602.952.6760, ext. 1 or frank@valleyleadership.org. |

Effecting Change Rather Than Accepting It
Interview with Professor Deepak Malhotra, Harvard Business School
Harvard Business School's Working Knowledge newsletter and site provides the latest research from leadership and business scholars, including topics such as entrepreneurship, leadership and management, and social enterprise and nonprofit, among many others.
In his new business fable, I Moved Your Cheese, Professor Deepak Malhotra challenges the idea that change is simply something we must anticipate, tolerate, and accept. Instead, the book teaches readers that success often lies in first questioning changes in the workplace and, if necessary, in effecting new changes ourselves.

Chair's Corner with Michelle Hernandez,
Board Chair | |

October is here, and with it comes Valley Leadership's annual membership dues drive. Look for our renewal information in your mailboxes this month. We are truly excited and inspired by the momentum we've generated so far this year, and I invite you to invest in the success of Valley Leadership and our footprint on the Valley by renewing your annual membership dues today.
Last night's debate between Phoenix mayoral candidates Wes Gullett and Greg Stanton was attended by over 200 people, and will premier on Cox Channel 7 on October 8, at 1:00pm. We are proud to have hosted an event of such significance to our entire community and I thank you for supporting our efforts to provide important civic opportunities.
Although the success of last night's event is certainly worth celebrating, things don't slow down at the Valley Leadership office. We are working on multiple projects relating to our events, Leadership Institute and Valley Teen Leadership:
- Nomination forms and sponsorship information for the 63rd Annual Man & Woman of the Year Luncheon are available now on our website. Nominations are due October 21, 2011.
- The next VL Leadership Skills Series event is in November. Get on Board, a training seminar featuring top leaders in the nonprofit industry, will focus on the skills needed to be an effective board member.
- Leadership Institute Class 33 are in the initial stages of their class projects. Please support any group that may reach out to you in the development of their projects. We expect these endeavors to be sustainable concepts with the potential to provide real benefit to the community, and we are already intrigued by many of the Class 33 ideas.
- Applications are now available for the Valley Teen Leadership Class 16. If you know a high school sophomore or junior who is highly motivated, involved and exhibits leadership qualities, please encourage him or her to apply for this transformational experience. If you are interested in volunteering to help with VTL, please contact the VL office.
With so many exciting programming elements already in the works, and many more to come in the next few months, I encourage you once again to support the continued momentum that Valley Leadership has created by renewing your annual membership dues or becoming a member of the Community Stewards Society today. |

| Valley Leadership Seeks Nominations | | |
Valley Leadership is now accepting nominations for the 63rd Annual Man & Woman of the Year recipients.
 | |
62nd Man & Woman Honorees
Jim Bruner and Sam Campana |
Each year, Valley Leadership solicits nominations from the public in its search for one man and one woman who have demonstrated significant visionary leadership and community service in the Valley. As a general rule, the service to the community must be outside the scope of the honoree's day-to-day employment. A representative committee headed up by previous honorees, Valley Leadership founders and past presidents of the Board selects the honorees.
The 63rd Annual Man & Woman of the Year will be honored at a presentation luncheon on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix Hotel.
Click here to download the nomination form. The nomination deadline is Friday, October 21, 2011. All form contents are held in strict confidence.
Contact Executive Director Frank McCune at frank@valleyleadership.org or 602.952.6760, ext. 1 for more information. |
