Pay It Forward In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.
To make a donation to the Leadership Financial Aid Fund, or for more information, please contact Executive Director Frank McCune at 602.952.6760, ext. 1 or frank@valleyleadership.org. |

As One
by
Mehrdad Baghai
and James
Quigley
Product Description from Amazon.com:
"Our world is as much about cooperation as it is about conflict; as much about collaboration as competition. Yet our knowledge of collective behavior is still relatively slim. Leaders who have been trained in the command-and-control mode of management are realizing that it often fails to truly engage people; in response, management thinkers have proclaimed the advent of a new, participatory model. But why should there be only two modes of collective behavior?
For the past two years Deloitte has invested in a major global initiative, the 'As One' project, to study effective collaborations. The project has discovered that there are many modes of 'As One behavior' and that all are effective in certain contexts. As One defines eight archetypes of leaders and followers. Taking more than 60 cases of successful collective behavior, the authors define the characteristics for each model and show how you can apply them to your organization."

Program Day 7 - "Economy Day"
Overview by Talonya Adams (Class 32)
As Class 32 moves into its final stretch of program days, groups are working vigorously to complete their community projects. On Friday, April 1, 2011, the class met at BlueCross BlueShield for a day filled with economists, instructive presentations and a dialogue regarding past and present factors impacting Arizona's economy. The day was chaired by Elliott Pollack, Jennifer Lindley and Jim Rounds. The film highlighted visionary leaders such as Carl Hayden, Barry Goldwater, Governor Paul Fannin and Mo Udall, who were instrumental in developing CAP, the aerospace and defense industry and bringing into fruition the concept of "cluster industries." Speakers ranging from Bruce Sohn, President of First Solar to Glenn Hamer, CEO of Arizona Chamber of Commerce to David Smith, County Manager of Maricopa County, discussed varied economic and political concepts and strategies. "Most of what we're doing is playing checkers," remarked Dr. Jay Q. Butler, Associate Professor of Real Estate, W.P. Carey School of Business, in response to strategies employed by Arizona leaders to help guide our state as we exit the recession. Governor Brewer's recent jobs package and related incentives were praised and discussed as monumental progress for Arizona. Additionally, Sandra Watson, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) discussed how the details surrounding the closing of the Department of Commerce on June 30, 2011 and the creation of the new ACA, which will being operating on July 1, 2011. They reconvened at ASU's Cronkite School of Journalism in the afternoon to experience the life of a journalist by completing a report on deadline and receiving some on-camera experience. Several volunteers from ALMA (Arizona Latino Media Association) were on hand to assist the teens during this activity. Special thanks to Joyce Grossman (Class 25) and the members of her class who stepped up to help sponsor VTL Day 4.
