Pay It Forward

In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.

To make a donation to the Leadership Financial Aid Fund, or for more information, please contact Executive Director Frank McCune at 602.952.6760, ext. 1 or frank@valleyleadership.org.
Book of the Month

Greater Than YourselfGreater Than Yourself: The Ultimate Lesson of True Leadership

by Steve Farber

Product Description from Amazon.com:

"Too many people assume the timeless principles of true leadership - of helping others achieve their full potential - don't apply Monday through Friday during work hours or in any circumstance where a paycheck is involved.

In Greater Than Yourself, Steve Farber proves them wrong: in this powerful and inspiring story, Farber shows that the goal of a genuine leader is to help others - teammates, employees, and colleagues - become more capable, confident, and accomplished than they are themselves. Through the actions of a forward-thinking and extraordinarily successful CEO, Farber reveals the three keys to achieving this: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself.

Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, Greater Than Yourself is perhaps the most powerful message today's business leaders can learn."

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. (Prominent leader in Civil Rights Movement; 1929-1968)

Leadership Resources
The Leadership Resource

"Leadership Development and Training has been a driving force for us. We believe everyone has the potential to be a leader. Yet not everyone will step out of their box, their comfort zone to truly become a Leader.
Leadership strength takes time. Confidence in being a leader only comes from the experiences of good and bad efforts, right and wrong decisions and tenacity. A willingness to learn.

The Leadership Resource is dedicated to providing resources for your leadership development. We hope to educate and motivate. We want to inspire you to take action."

Chairman's Corner with Rob Leslie, Board Chair

Rob Leslie headshot

Who can believe that it is already March 2011? At Valley Leadership, we are excitedly preparing for the 62nd Annual Man and Woman of the Year Luncheon which will be held this month on the 24th. Thank you to all of our event and table sponsors who have already committed to supporting the event. We also want to recognize the Valley Leadership alumni that are in the process of organizing their class tables. Valley Leadership alumni have a long tradition of supporting the Man and Woman of the Year event by joining with fellow classmates to fill tables as a way of reconnecting with their class and supporting the organization.

March is also prime recruiting time for Leadership Institute. Applications are due by April 15, and we encourage our alumni and community friends to share the application link with friends, colleagues and acquaintances who would be a great fit for Class 33. Many past candidates have applied solely on the recommendations of alumni who urged them to do so, and we value the power of word-of-mouth marketing in our community. Thank you to all of you who have already shared about Valley Leadership and Leadership Institute to others. We look forward to selecting yet another class of outstanding community leaders.

As we continue to accomplish the goals set for our organization in the last three-year strategic planning period, Valley Leadership is already preparing for the future. In the coming months, the board and staff will participate in strategic planning to further the organization's success and create a vision for the next few years. We look forward to sharing the new goals we develop with our alumni and community friends; and we especially look forward to seeing many of you at the Man and Woman of the Year luncheon.

Meet Class 32
Kim CoferKim Cofer
This is Kim's second tour to the Valley; this time she has been here for over 6 years.  It keeps calling her back. She works for IT Partners as an IT Consultant (a fancy way to say Sales Rep).  She works with wicked smart engineers and together they provide customers with technologies and specialized services exclusively for the data center.

What makes a good leader? A good leader to me is someone who can create and communicate their vision.  I also feel a good leader knows who their audience is and how to effectively communicate to them.  It is also extremely important to me that a leader has fierce integrity in good times and bad.

Why did you apply for Valley Leadership? I applied for Valley Leadership because I wanted to gain a better understanding of the deepest needs of the community so that I can match that to my passion.  The people I meet along this journey are a MAJOR BONUS!

Alana PodwikaAlana Podwika
Alana is the pharmacy director and emergency preparedness coordinator for Mountain Park Health Center. She moved to the Valley in 1998 after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh and would just like to say "Go Steelers."

What makes a good leader? A good leader is someone who has integrity, leads by example, and creates a culture of shared leadership. A visionary.

Why did you apply for Valley Leadership?

I applied to Valley Leadership because a colleague told me I should, but I have learned so much about my community and Arizona as a whole.  It is a great opportunity to meet people with the same sense of enthusiasm about wanting to make a difference.  Class 32 is the best class ever.

Steve Yamamori
Steve YamamoriSteve has been in the Valley for 30 years now. He currently works as the Manager of Community Relations for APS where he manages a team of Community Relations Managers who service critical customers, community and business leaders and support non-profits statewide.

What makes a good leader? My team is a group of very high performing individuals, so a servant leadership mentality is crucial to providing your team the best resources to help them achieve the highest performance. Also, being a good listener. Don't ask a question if you don't care about the answer.

Why did you apply for Valley Leadership? I am always looking to learn and meet new people and was well aware the caliber of people, past and present that make up Valley Leadership.

Kelli SmithKelli Smith
Kelli has been in the Valley since 1984 and is currently the Vice President of Operations and Systems at Barrow Neurological Foundation and St. Joseph's Foundation.  These foundations are responsible for raising and managing philanthropic funds to benefit St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and the Barrow Neurological Institute.

What makes a good leader?
A good leader is one that paves the way, making the work of others easier and more rewarding.

Why did you apply for Valley Leadership?
I applied for Valley Leadership in order to learn more about the Valley and the drivers of change here.  An extraordinary benefit that I hadn't fully considered was the relationships with the amazing people participating in the program.

Valley Leadership to Host European Leaders

2011 German Marshall Fellows

Valley Leadership will host a group of European leaders through the Marshall Memorial Fellowship March 15-20, 2011. Founded in 1982, the Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) was created by the German Marshall Fund of the United States to introduce a new generation of European leaders to the United States.

This year's visiting Fellows include (click here to view their bios):

  • Ms. Sofia Asteriadi, Head of Cabinet, Stavros Lambrinidis, MEP European Parliament, Brussels, Belgium;
  • Ms. Magdalena Krawczyk-Radwan, Researcher and Analyst, Educational Research Institute, Warsaw, Poland;
  • Mr. Jean Richard de Latour, Finance Inspector, IGF Ministry of Economy, Finance and Employment, Paris, France;
  • Ms. Sevdalina Rukanova, Senior Officer, Network Building & International Initiatives, European Foundation Centre, Brussels, Belgium;
  • Mr. Bence Sávgári, Research Fellow, Institute of Sociology Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary

The Marshall Memorial Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders from the U.S. and Europe to explore institutions, politics, and culture on the other side of the Atlantic.  American and European Fellows each visit five cities during the 24-day program. They meet formally and informally with a range of policymakers, prominent community members, and local MMF alumni.  During the trip, each Fellow also has the opportunity to explore his or her individual professional interests beyond the group programs, which focus on a range of domestic and international policy areas.

While in Phoenix, Valley Leadership has set up meetings with Sheriff Arpaio; a tour of Tent City jail; police ride-alongs with the City of Phoenix Police Department; a court tour and meeting with the Honorable Louis Frank Dominguez (Class 13), Judge, City of Phoenix Municipal Court; in addition to several personal appointments relating to the Fellows professional interests.

Meet the Leaders

Milton DellossierQ&A with Milton Dellossier

Profile: Milton Dellossier (Class 29), Man and Woman of the Year Event Vice-chair

Background: I relocated from Juarez, Mexico to the U.S. in 1999 to finish school and pursue a degree in Business Management at Arizona State University. I remember coming to visit the ASU campus in April and thinking, wow, this place is amazing, sign me up! The move was in August and I remember it was like 114 degrees, and I thought, I have moved to the inferno, what have I done?!

The people of Phoenix have been incredibly welcoming and friendly to me and that's why I love Arizona. After graduating from ASU, I started my career with Wells Fargo Financial in 2001, in 2002 became a Wells Home Mortgage Consultant, and was named the Regional Diverse Segments Manager in 2004. This is a hybrid role that focuses on creation and preservation of homeownership for low and moderate income families across Arizona and New Mexico. It's a challenging job, but a lot fun because I get to manage several functions including marketing, business development, community relations as well as the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation grants program for these two states.

What experiences led to his involvement with the Man and Woman of the Year committee:

After being introduced to the Leadership Institute by Dave Howell, Valley Leadership was a transformational experience for me. I engaged in activities, dialogues, seminars and tours with people from all walks of life that exposed me to different areas of what our community really needs. This made me understand the Valley is in dire need of leaders we can look up to, count on and support to make a difference; and I believe those recognized by the Man and Woman of the Year event represent people that can affect change and the lives of those that need it most.

What his big goal is for the event:

Profitability. Many organizations put on these types of events, but fail to strategically plan them to be sustainable and profitable over the long term.  This organization is funded by people who understand and identify with the needs of our community and know how an experience in VL can help shape the future of Arizona.

Volunteer opportunities/Resources needed:

We really want to let all our past class members about individual table sales! Please contact me or Amy if you haven't yet purchased a table or need a table for your class. You may be surprised to find a table already exists and you may not have to buy an individual ticket!

Program Day 6 - "Livable Communities"
Overview by Talonya Adams (Class 32)

Valley Leadership Class 32, the best class ever, met again on Friday, March 4, 2011 for Program Day 6 entitled "Livable Communities" - a day the class was honored to share with the current class members of Hispanic Leadership Institute. The blended group agreed that St. Luke's Medical Center earned the host-of-the-year award by serving a beautiful hot lunch with decadent deserts to follow.

Dr. Kwang-Wu Kim, Dean of Herberger College of Arts & Architecture, presented an impassioned and humorous presentation on community engagement, which he distinguished from "community outreach," a term he called colonial. Kimber Lanning, Executive Director of Local First Arizona, spoke about her initiatives to enlighten and encourage our community to shop locally and understand the greater indirect benefits of doing so. She shared www.shiftarizona.com as a resource to discover local venues in Arizona. Our leaders also welcomed Debra Paine (Class 28), Executive Director of Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix, who discussed Business on Board, a training program for emerging board members.

The latter part of the day introduced an engaging, hands-on project, where groups took maps of the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area and created vertical, comical and memorable landmarks, reflective of significant places around the Valley. The day concluded with each leader's pledge to take positive action, followed by local patronage at Bill Johnson's Big Apple. With less than three months until graduation, many leaders in the class are interested in making more meaningful connections; let's all begin socially by using Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Valley Teen Leadership:
Day 2 - "Understanding Who I am as a Leader"
The teens met on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the University of Advancing Technology for their day on "Understanding Who I am as a Leader." The program day was chaired by Debbie Paine (Class 28) and Vice-chair Michelle Kable (Class 31). Under their leadership the teens spent the morning doing a D.I.S.C. assessment (Dominance/Influence/Steadiness/Conscientiousness) on themselves; and through a series of entertaining activities, the teens were able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and come to an understanding that individuals with various strengths are needed to make a strong work team. Nikki Hicks (Class 31) came in after lunch to talk with the teens about developing successful habits and making time to do personal reflection as they develop their life goals.  Michelle Kable then led the teens through a fun exercise of identifying their interior and exterior perceptions of themselves before the day concluded with the class lesson out of the book Success for Teens entitled "Habits are Powerful."

Day 3 - "Diversity and Teen Issues"
ASU West hosted VTL this past Saturday, March 5, 2011, for the program on "Diversity and Teen Issues." The day was led by Day Chair Marci Hendrickson (Class 22) and Vice-chair Allen Kimbrough (Class31). Jacque Starks, with Maricopa Community Colleges, led the class through a challenging stereo-typing exercise entitled "Walking in Someone Else's Shoes," which was followed by a session on "Giving Respect, Getting Respect," with Marquita Beene from the City of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department.  It was an emotional morning with the teens really opening up about hurtful words relating to stereotyping different races, ethnicities and life-styles.  The afternoon began with the Success for Teens lesson on "Attitude Is Everything" followed by break-out groups on a variety of teen issues.  We thank Samantha Johnson (Class 30) and her son Ryan, Stephanie Orr (Class 11) and Christina Spicer (Class 28) for facilitating the break-out sessions. Thank you to the committee members who worked on this program day: Anielka Contreras (Class 31), Saira Qureshi (Class 31), and Marisol Miller (Class 25).  And, a big thank you to Alberto Olivas (Class 22) for helping to secure presenter Jacque Starks.
