Pay It Forward In the midst of these tough economic times, small businesses, organizations and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to pay tuition for their emerging and existing leaders to go through premier leadership development programs such as Leadership Institute. In order to ensure the ability of all outstanding candidates to participate in our program, we are establishing the Leadership Financial Aid Fund. If you were able to graduate from the Leadership Institute, and especially if someone else - an employer or sponsor - made this experience possible for you, please consider making a contribution and paying it forward to a future leader in need.

Practically Radical:
Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself
by William C. Taylor
From Publisher's Weekly:
"As the business world becomes increasingly competitive, global, and adoptive of new technologies, companies worldwide are constantly searching for answers about how to best evolve to meet their customers' needs and to stay abreast of their competitors. Taylor (Mavericks at Work) asserts that change is the name of the game; he takes us on an inside look at 25 companies that have grown ever more adaptive to not merely survive but thrive in today's challenging environment.
Taylor's book is intended to guide leaders in launching fresh initiatives and rethinking the logic of leadership itself as they work to rally their colleagues around an agenda for renewal. The work achieves its promise with actionable prescriptions and meaningful examples, such as how organizations like the Girl Scouts have redefined their brand and revitalized their mission, how Zappos has reimagined retail and service, and why, like IBM, leaders must constantly challenge the status quo by examining the self-reflection and commitment to innovation. An engaging and briskly written read, this will captivate and benefit business people interested in change and innovation."

And Off They Go!
Valley Teen Leadership Class 15 is off to a great start under the leadership of Michelle Hernandez (Class 23), VTL Program Chair.
Orientation for the teens and their parents was hosted once again by our friends at Wells Fargo on January 19th. The teens and adults received an overview of the program and had an opportunity to meet with one another, but the highlight of the evening was Jonathan Charlton (VTL Class 14) who spoke about his experiences in VTL, and how a trip to Central America over the summer for a school work project evolved into his creating a non-profit to support the youth of that community. Jonathan continues to serve as a member of the VTL Advisory committee and is helping as a program day volunteer this year.
The class then met a week later for their Retreat held at St. Mary's Food bank in Phoenix and sponsored by SRP. They spent a day learning about each other and participating in team building activities lead by Debbie Paine (Class 27), Retreat Chair, and Michelle Kable (Class 31), Retreat Vice-Chair.
Program Day 1, "Courage to Act," was held on Saturday, February 5th and was graciously hosted at Grand Canyon University through a new partnership with The Ken Blanchard College of Business. The day was organized by Michelle Hernandez (Class 23), Program Day 1 Chair and Jason Pistillo (Class 27), Day 1 Vice-Chair, and supported by several volunteers, including Marisol Miller (Class 25), Dana Kralicek (VTL 13), Erika Crandall (VTL 14), Tracy Carneal (VTL 14), Joshua Miller (VTL 11). The teens had the honor of spending the morning with Dr. Ken Blanchard, who flew in especially to present to the teens on "Leading at a Higher Level." The rest of the day was filled with lessons in vision coaching, situational leadership and managing one's personal brand.
Thank you to our teen sponsors: Best Buy Children's Fund, Coyotes Charities, Fry's Food Stores, Otto & Edna Neely Foundation, The USAA Foundation, Wells Fargo, SRP, The Ken Blanchard College of Business, University of Advancing Technology, APS, ASU West Campus, Arizona Latino Media Association, Universal Technical Institute, Scottsdale Community College, Rio Salado Community College, and Michelle & Chris Hernandez. |

Ginger Clayton
Ginger is the President and CEO of Elontec, which provides Technology, Telecommunications and Commercial Relocation services. She first moved to Tucson, AZ in 1989 and then arrived in Phoenix in 1995. What makes a good leader? I appreciate leaders who are inspiring, passionate about what they do and serve the community. Why did you apply for Valley Leadership? I really want to make a difference in the lives of others. I thought that the best way to learn more about really, truly making an impact would be through Valley Leadership and the great instructors and members.
Laura EtterLaura is Senior Associate at Goodman Schwartz Public Affairs. While she works in all areas of the firm (state government relations, municipal government relations, community outreach and issue campaigns), her focus is on association management, community outreach, and project management. She has been in the Valley since 1998 with a 4-year detour in the middle.
What makes a good leader?
A good leader is one who is honest, respectful, passionate, committed, and provides direction while supporting and encouraging others to challenge their potential and achieve their own greatness.
Why did you apply for Valley Leadership?
My desire is to serve and support our community, and ultimately find opportunities where my abilities, education and joy in working with people at all levels will provide the greatest asset to our community through not only my service, but through enabling and educating others as well. The Leadership Institute is an opportunity to meet and work with like-minded ambitious peers who also have a vested interest in our community and combine expertise and talents to collectively work toward tackling the difficult issues facing the Valley today and in the future.
Regena Frieden
Regena is the Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. She has been in the Valley for over 14 years.
What makes a good leader?
In my eyes, a leader is someone who can inspire people to achieve their best, not only for their company but for themselves and the community.
Why did you apply for Valley Leadership? I applied for Valley Leadership so I could learn more about Arizona and connect with other people and organizations. Thus far, it has been a tremendous experience and has exceeded my expectations for personal growth and development.
Joyce Medina Joyce is currently the Acting Education & Scholarships Officer for Arizona Community Foundation. In this role she serves as an advisor to Education Funds at ACF that make grants to improve education for students in Arizona. Joyce was born in Laramie, Wyoming, and moved to the Valley with her family at the age of two before relocating to Flagstaff when she was in high school. She happily returned to attend ASU, and has since moved to Atlanta, New York City, Ft. Lauderdale before returning to Phoenix in 2006.
What makes a good leader? A good leader does all the things the books say - be honest, be respectful, and listen. But a GREAT leader is relentless in their pursuit of success and radiates their passion for the mission every day.
Why did you apply for Valley Leadership?
I applied for Valley Leadership because it's where all the cool kids are. Seriously. I felt that the best place to learn new things was from the really cool people doing really amazing things. Caryn Sanchez Caryn has lived in the Valley for 23 years. She is originally from Taos, NM and attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. She currently works for SRP in Economic Development where she serves as the central point of SRP contact, expertise and integration on economic development related activities. What makes a good leader? A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A good leader is confident and needs to be able to be a source of inspiration. Why did you apply for Valley Leadership?
I have heard so many wonderful things about Valley Leadership from so many people that I knew I had to apply. I participated in the Gilbert Leadership program and thoroughly enjoyed the experience so I knew I would enjoy Valley Leadership as well. In addition, Valley Leadership will give me an opportunity to learn about the key issues impacting the community and it will also help me further develop my leadership skills and build lifelong relationships. |

Q&A with Amy Buchan
Profile: Amy Buchan (Class 31), Man & Woman of the Year Event Chair
Background: Almost 12 years ago, I came to Phoenix from my native Las Vegas, NV to attend ASU (go Sun Devils!). I graduated with a degree in Journalism and a minor in Communications. I spent eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks as the Director of Community Relations. I also spent some time with the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority and am now the Director of Community Investment for Apollo Group Inc. (parent company for University of Phoenix). My role at Apollo includes managing our non-profit partnerships nationwide, but most of my energy is focused on the Phoenix and Chicago markets.
In addition to Valley Leadership I'm involved in the community in various aspects such as:
-- ICAN (Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods), Capital Campaign Committee Member -- Valley of the Sun United Way, Generation United Executive Committee Member -- Valley Youth Theatre, Member of the Board of Directors -- YWCA, Member of the Board of Directors
What experiences led to her involvement with the Man and Woman of the Year committee:
I've attended the luncheon in the past and I've always admired the honorees for their leadership and community outreach. When I was approached to chair the event, I was honored to think that I could, in some small way, be part of the legacy that is Man and Woman of the Year. It's been a great experience to work with our amazing committee volunteers, the past event chairs who are so supportive, the VL staff and of course Frank and Milton.
What her big goals are for the year:
To raise $100,000 for Valley Leadership from the Man and Woman of the Year Luncheon. We set the bar high but know that this is an obtainable goal because of the passion our alumni, community and business leaders have for Valley Leadership. My second goal is to go back to school to get my MBA.
Volunteer opportunities/ Resources needed:
We're always looking for passionate and dedicated volunteers who are ready to roll up their sleeves and help out. This event is VL's largest fundraiser, so we have plenty of options for volunteering; we have something for everyone. We're gearing up for the big day, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the luncheon.

Program Day 5 - "Government Day"
Overview by Bev Medlyn (Class 32) Government Day drew speakers from all branches and levels of government to address VL's Class 32 from the lofty perch of the Arizona Republic's 10th floor overseeing downtown Phoenix. Ken Bennett, Arizona Secretary of State, demonstrated the assembly and subsequent unbalance of the state budget without knocking over a single Kleenex box from the towers that symbolized various funding sources. He urged class members to give feedback to their legislators struggling to close a $1.5 billion budget gap and to become involved in political campaigns. Hon. Rebecca White Berch, chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, gave an overview of the court system and a tip for a $100K-plus job: Justice of the Peace, which requires only that officeholders be residents, over 18 and read and write English. City and county officials described the challenges their jurisdictions face, including the ongoing costly battles among county elected officials. Top Hispanic politicians and activists traced the evolution of Hispanic leadership in Arizona. Political consultants and a political editor provided insight into how they influence and inform the electorate. Sheriff Joe Arpaio talked about his 19 years as Maricopa County sheriff and declared his intention to run again. The stimulating discussions were capped off by a tour of the Republic/Channel 12 newsroom and the new Channel 12 studio.
