'Flip Flop for Andy' Raises $2,500

Galen Admissions Manager Maggie Claypoole and Andy Bobsin.
Andy Bobsin and Maggie Claypoole
Galen students, faculty and employees pitched in to raise money for Galen student Andy Bobsin, who is currently undergoing treatment for a cancerous growth that was removed from his lung. Students who participated in "Flip Flop for Andy" made donations and then wore flip flops to on-campus classes in a show of support.

A total of $2,500 was raised to help Bobsin defray medical costs. He was, as one would expect, a bit taken aback.

"Was I surprised?" Bobsin said. "Yes, to say the least. I couldn't get over the thought that people care enough about me to do this."

Galen to Celebrate National Nurses Week
Galen will celebrate National Nurses Week (May 6-12) with a number of activities, both on campus and off. On May 8, Galen students and faculty will go to Kosair Children's Hospital to present cookies to all of the nurses' break rooms and to clean up the toys in the patients' play room. Also, on March 12 and 13 Galen will host a "carnival" wherein students can win a Galen backpack. In addition, all students will receive a Galen water bottle filled with goodies. In addition, the Student Services department will be sending out historical information about the nursing profession to students during National Nurses Week. Join us in celebrating the great profession of nursing.

Galen students participate in Frazier project
WWII NurseGalen students recently had the opportunity to serve the community, show the community who they are, and learn more about nursing and the role of nursing during World War II. Galen was invited to participate in Frazier International History Museum's World War II exhibit, which began last October. Nursing students made a poster display with 1940s artifacts, helped children select coloring pages, stickers, and post cards, and make and dress paper dolls as World War II nurses. The humanities class students also presented a play about the role of nurses during WWII.
