Galen Participates in Race for the Cure

A team of about 35 Galen students, faculty and employees raised more than $1,600 for cancer charities, including the Oct. 3 Race for the Cure 5K walk/run. Vonda Massie RN, BSN, who is Galen's Clinical Learning Lab Facilitator, led the charge to organize the fundraiser, with many others helping out. Galen employees Kim Malloy and Tiffany Wilson "were wonderful," Massie said. "It truly was a joint effort by many individuals." The fundraiser also included pink ribbon sales at the school and a student-organized Bowl-a-Thon (see story below).

Bowl-a-Thon Supports Cancer Charity
As part of Race for the Cure initiative, Galen students Jennifer Gornish and Travis Sexton, on behalf of the PN Student Nurse Association, organized a Bowl-a-Thon and also solicited McDonald's to provide breakfast for the Galen team the morning of the Race for the Cure. The bowl-a-thon took place on Saturday, Sept. 19; approximately 25 Galen students, faculty and employees participated, raising approximately $280.

Public Colleges Turning Away Nursing Students

School officials say it is very difficult to recruit nurses to become faculty when their pay would be cut by as much as half to make the switch.
