Galen year 2 student Kimberly Quavers needed the perfect way to make sure she passed her Complex Nursing Problems end-of-quarter assessment. So she invented it.
"This exam can be a stressful experience to say the least," said her instructor Karen Greenawald, ARNP, MS, MPH, "and the students spend the majority of the quarter learning and practicing the various assessment techniques involved. In addition to learning all of the individual systems assessments, the student must then integrate these systems into a fluid exam. And all of this must be completed in a 45-minute time frame."
So Kim cut a human-shaped form from a table cloth, and placed the various organs where they belonged so she could practice. On the back, she listed what she was to include. This made it easier if someone was helping her, as they could read and know exactly what was to be included, Greenawald said.
"Kim stated that the actual creation of this tool really helped her put together the various steps needed as well as to retain the information," Greenawald continued. "When she showed the teaching aid to the class several students wanted to have one as well."
Apparently it worked -- Kim passed her exam with flying colors.
