Issue: # 2 April/2009
Welcome to The Pulse, Galen's official e-newsletter. Each quarter, we'll deliver Galen news and happenings right to your inbox, along with nursing news and more. We hope you enjoy it!
First class ready to graduate
Next week the inaugural class will graduate.  Comprised of dedicated students, this class is excited to make Galen history.

Many in this class have secured employment, others will continue their education in a BSN program, while others will do both.

The graduation ceremony will be held at Christ's Church at Mason (5165 Western Row Road, Mason, Ohio 45040) on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 pm.  All are welcome to attend.

Guest speaker for the ceremony is Galen's Vice President of Academic Affairs Tracy A. Ortelli, MS, RN, CNE.  Three awards will be presented at the ceremony.  One student who exemplifies outstanding leadership qualities will be honored with The Dean's Leadership Award and one student who encompasses intangible qualities about human kindness will receive The Human Touch Award.  The DAISY Award will be presented to an extraordinary nursing faculty member.
Career preparation opportunities a success
Galen students understand that taking an active role in career preparation proves to ease the transition from recent graduate to experienced RN. Three consecutive Thursday events were planned to prepare students for life after graduation.

The first week, online and library résumé resources were discussed.  Tips for creating an appropriate, yet engaging, resume were shared.

The following week students networked with Human Resources representatives from local healthcare facilities at the Career Fair.  Representatives from educational facilities were also present to discuss opportunities for continuing education after graduation.  US Bank generously supplied pizza.

The third week, students were invited to submit a cover letter/resume and to stop by the Library for one-on-one tips concerning their specific cover letter and resume.
Ortelli, Vogt named to Business First list
Galen's Vice President of Academic Affairs Tracy A. Ortelli, and President Mark A. Vogt were named to the Business First Partners in Healthcare for 2009 which honors "Louisville-area health care professionals who put their hearts and souls into their work."

A panel of editors chose nominees who have a large impact on the business side of health care, Business First Publisher Tom Monohan wrote. Ortelli and Vogt were two of 169 partners chosen -- and it is worth noting that some 85,000 people work in health care in the Louisville area.
