Manos Andinas is a small NGO comprised of rural indigenous farmers who are
leaders in their communities. They started up about 5 years ago and focus on the
education of local farmers in organic and ecologically friendly farming
techniques. Primarily, they offer trainings in the following
areas:
*sustainable management of natural resources (soil,
water and forest) *development/management of organic gardens *breeding
small farm animals such as chickens, sheep, pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs
*management of the Andean basin *organic production of Andean
crops *conservation of the indigenous culture through dance, textiles,
customs, myths and legends *strengthening of local, indigenous
organizations
The intern can work in the agricultural sector
(planting, harvesting, weeding, etc.) and learn about Andean agriculture, work
on adobe building construction, construction of stables and corrals for small
animals, the development of organic farms, the development of a medicinal plant
garden, providing animal care, making dyes for fabrics or making aromatics. It
may be possible to assist in community events or teach informal classes or make
brochures.
Several European students have spent time at Manos
Andinas to gather research for a thesis in academic areas such as sociology,
medicine, geology, hydrology, and environmental conservation. Thus, there are
great opportunities for a student working on a thesis
project.
Located just outside the city of Cuzco and easily accessible to Machu Picchu.
Requirements: 4th year university level
Spanish; the ability to live and work in a rural environment; agricultural
