| Tomato Heartbreak
Q: My tomato plants set fruit beautifully, I had so many tomatoes and one day I went out to the garden and all of a sudden I had dark spots on the leaves and the tomatoes were just awfull. What is going on with my tomatoes?
A: There are serveral diseases that might be causing your problems, but from the sound of things it sounds like you have what tomatoes are most vulnerable to: Blight caused by the fungus Alternaria solani. It is endemic to the Northeast, mid-alantic and midwest, striking the hardest in warm, humid seasons. The spores live in the soil and on plant debris, so rotation planting and RIGOROUS Cleanup will help this to keep this at bay. Alternaria prefers a stressed -unhealthy plant-so the first step is to plant vigorous seedlings. Space them far apart for good air circulation, in fertile well watered soil. Mulch as soon as you plant, so the rain cannot splach the spores from the ground onto the lower leaves. Water only at ground level, wet leaves not only spread the blight, but will consume it quickly. Plants with small fruit like cherry tomatoes are somewhat resistant, also late varieties with large vines come through better than early varieties. |
| Childrens's Seeds
Q: I would like to introduce my eight-year old to gardening using some easily grown vegetable seeds for a project for school, at this time of year. What would you suggest?
A: It would depend on what vegetables your child enjoys, and if a goal is to get a crop before the attention span wanders. The easiest vegetable to grow from seed is the radish, it is truly magical to see ir sprout into being. As this is not Spring time the Radish grows best in cool weather, which is another plus. Another would be Beans, they take a little longer than a Radish (about 55 days-depending on your zone) but they are as easy to plant and grow. |
| Help!! My Winter Squash is Taking Over
Q: My winter squash is taking over the whole garden and are smothering the rest of my vegetables. Can I cut back the vines and where do I do it at?
A: It is almost impossible to kill healthy squash vines once they get going. Once the plant has set four or five fruits, you can prune it back. On each runner, leave a couple of leaf nodes past the last fruit that you want to keep, then pinch off the growing tip at the next node. If the vines are large, you may want to cut off quite a bit instead of just pinching. As long as you do not trample the leaves or disturb the main root, you will hurt the plant or the squash that you left on it. |
