How to Grow Tomatoes
supertomato

Tomatoes prefer a light, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Soils with high levels of nutrients, especially nitrogen reduce high yields. Turn some shopped leaves into the soil in the fall, or add compost in spring. A few weeks before transplanting, cover the growing beds with black plastic to warm the soil. If you have a sunny window or better still grow lights, and a bit of patience, you will most likely end up with the biggest, best and tastiest tomatoes if you start your own seedlings. Tomato seedling are especially susceptible to damping off disease, so be sure to use a soil-less starting mix or medium for your seed flats. Six-eight weeks before the expected transplanting date, sow seeds.

Please note that you should check zones on our web site to determine the time to transplant. Remember that transplanting times arrive earlier in the Southern states that the Northern states.

    Growing Guide
  • Germination Requirements
  • Heat: Many Vegetables and Flowers require a 72-78 degree soil temperature range, this soil temp must be constant day and night during this period. Cool Soil Temps: Other seedlings such as pansies, some perennials and certain vegetables require cool soil temps. Pansies as an example need an approx temp. of 60-65 degrees day and night, so a heat mat would not be advised. Light: The requirements for each can be determined by how much soil is placed on top when sowing, see each vegetable or flower for informatin on the depth of the seeds.

  • Size of Your Garden
  • If you have a large garden to work with, the types of plant habits and varieties that you can grow are not as limited as with a smaller area. 2 BSeeds has many space-saving varieties that are ideal for small gardens and patio containers. If you have a small garden, be sure to choose varieties that have a bush-type or space-saving plant habit when ordering beans, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and squash. Most leafy greens like lettuce, endive, spinach, and root crops like, beets, carrots, onions and radishes take up very little space and will also work well in containers on decks or patios. A couple of pepper plants or eggplants take up little space and can be easily grown in containers. Tomatoes can be grown in cages or on stakes in the garden to save room. If you have very limited space, try Tumbling Tom Red and Yellow tomatoes. These two unique varieties were developed for use in hanging baskets (12-15" baskets) and can be hung outside just about anywhere you have full sun exposure. If you do grow in containers, be sure that the containers are large enough to hold the crop you will be growing in them. For leafy crops you will want a container that is 10-12" deep; for root crops choose one that is 12-15" deep; and for tomatoes, peppers and eggplants you will want a container that is 15-20" deep. Watch the soil moisture and fertility closely and be sure that you provide for good drainage in the bottom of the container.
