May 2008
Greetings!

The spring edition of our communiqué focuses on functional fitness.  We have featured an article on core stability by Carl Peterson, a Vancouver physiotherapist.  We have a fun new contest to enter so please scroll down for details.

Look who's joining the team... next month we will be introducing Evolution Chair exercises.  Evy, your own personal online trainer, will guide you through those much needed stretches and exercises, to help you keep fit while you sit.

We have just launched a new Facebook group called Posture Perfect, sign up or log in to your Facebook account, you will find us by searching under groups, feel free to write on our wall and post pictures.

Now let's spring in to action.

Fit to Play™ & Work: Core Stability 1 (Basework & Bridging)

by Carl Petersen BPE, BSc(PT)

Core StrengthThis is the first of  a 3 part series of a Core Stability Training articles.

The core (trunk) muscles form the stable support base for the body. The core consists of  four main muscles: 'the inner unit': the transversus abdominus (TA) (lower abdominals), multifidus (deep, small muscle of the back), the pelvic floor muscles and the diaphragm. These muscles work together to support the back and pelvis.

Whether starting from the center or not, the trunk muscles help transfer energy from the legs through the core (trunk) to the upper body and arms.

You want to learn to switch on your core on at a low level-like turning up the dimmer switch on a light (Petersen, 2006). Thinking of switching on your core will help connect the upper and lower core musculature through the central core "inner unit."

To view a number of core stability exercises in bridging positions that are taken from our Fit to Play™ & Perform DVD series: read the full article.

Reviews

"In my profession, I am sitting for long periods of time at the computer and thought massage therapy was the only solution to my chronic lower back pain. In spring 2007 I received an email link for an "evolution chair" and I have never looked back! The combined base and ball provide the perfect stability and my lower back pain is now non-existent.  Further, I totally notice a difference with my core muscles. I receive lots of inquiries from colleagues and clients alike about the Evolution Chair and highly recommend it to anyone who sits for long periods of time."
