Benefits of Setting Goals
Goal setting is something we should all do consistently throughout our lives, because knowing exactly what you want from life will bring you closer to achieving your goal.

Achieving or making progress towards a goal can be hugely motivating. Once you set an idea in your mind that you are going to do something you are likely to go that extra mile to achieve it and when you do, your confidence will rise.  Every time we set ourselves a goal, we grow as a person. The reason for this is that we are probably going to have to develop or learn about something new to achieve it.Goal Setting

Goals do not need to be set in concrete, you can change and modify them at any time. In fact, you will most likely find that modifying them will be necessary as you grow and reach your final goal.
Write Your Goals Down

The biggest secret of successful goal setting is putting pen to paper and writing down your aims.

"Until you commit your goals to paper,
your intentions are like seeds without soil".
Winston Churchill

Without a plan, reaching your goals tend to be a hit-or-miss proposition, and time is easily wasted.  Without a plan, you may find yourself reacting to the demands of others rather than focusing on your own goals.  Keeping them trapped in the nether reaches of your brain is a barrier to success.  Do that and you will live in the doldrums repeating the mantra 'I would have, I should have, I could have.'
10 Top Tips For Setting Goals
If you haven't already done so, it's time to start goal setting.

1. Effective goals are written.  Writing down your goals is a first step toward achieving them.

2.  Write you goals in specific, measurable terms.  A goal needs to be measurable so that your progress can be evaluated and so that you will know when you have achieved it.

3.  Visualise your goal.  Picture yourself reaching your goal.    The more you visualise and desire your goal, the harder you will work to achieve it.

4.  Set realistic goals.  Goals need to challenge your skills and abilities, without discouraging your effort and performance.

5. Realistic deadlines.  Set a schedule for each of your goals.  Your are more likely to take action when you set a realistic time frame for accomplishing your goal.

6.  Manageable chunks.  A goal can sometimes seem overwhelming because of its size.  If it is divided into smaller chunks, it will becomes easier to manage.

7.  Analyse your goals for potential problems.  By considering your goals in terms of what could go wrong, then you can take action to resolve or minimize problems before they occur.

8.  Eliminate or minimize the consequences of potential problems.  Following on from 7, identify the action that is required to either remove the cause of the problem or minimize its consequences.

9.  Regularly review progress.  A periodic review of your goals will help ensure that they continue to be realistic, timely and relevant.

10.  Effective goals yield rewards that are of value to you.    We stay motivated to work toward our goals when we know and desire the resulting rewards, whatever they may be.  As you establish each goal, identify at least one meaningful reward for yourself.
Finally ...
Even if things don't go according to your written plan, at least you'll know.  Without a plan how would you know if you were going off track?  Even if the plan changes, its mere existence tends to get you going.

"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity".
