In times of crises, more than ever people look to their leader for reassurance. Leaders therefore need to inspire confidence in their people.
The 12 principles below help you look behind the 'numbers' and point to those key actions that will most help you, your business and the people you work with to survive and even thrive in the midst of difficult times.
Leadership in tough times is basically the same as it is in good times. In fact, many leaders believe that it's actually easier being a good leader in hard times than to be a good leader in good times.
If we thought as deeply about these issues when the times are good, many of our issues when times are tough would probably be leessened! |
| 12 Principles For Leading in Tough Times |
|
- Step Up: Be present, visible and accessible. Get out there and get seen.
- Be Proactive: Act on rather than respond to the changing world around you.
- Be Accountable: Take the accountable mindset not the blaming 'victim'.
- Learn New Things: Challenge yourself and others. Stretch comfort zones. Don't focus on what you must give up - focus on what you may gain.
- Respond to Uncertainty: Strong leadership at times like this makes people feel safe and more secure. Act decisively and swiftly.
- Be Authentic & Genuine: People do not want a heroic gung-ho approach, they are looking for reassuring everyday leadership.
- Make Good Use Of People: You've got some great people, make use of their knowledge, involve and empower. Be tough with any under performers.
- Turn Off Auto Pilot: Stay alert at the wheel in order to fully recognise the challenges and opportunities around you.
- Communicate: Connect with your people and don't hide behind the walls of your office.
- The Key 20%: Around 80% of your results flows from 20% of your activities. Be clear on the key 20% of the business. Focus and deliver.
- Challenge The Status Quo: Tough times require some kind of change. If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got.(In tough times you might not even get that)
- Measure Twice, Cut Once: Plan, plan and plan! schedule and organise yourself and your team.
