Event with Judge Sam L. Amirante & Danny Broderick |
"Sam, could you do me a favor?" Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the Public Defender's Office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history.
Sam Amirante had just opened his first law practice when he got a phone call from his friend John Wayne Gacy, a well-known and well-liked community figure. Gacy was upset about what he called "police harassment" and asked Amirante for help. With the police following his every move in connection with the disappearance of a local teenager, Gacy eventually gives a drunken, dramatic, early morning confession - to his new lawyer. Gacy is eventually charged with murder and Amirante suddenly becomes the defense attorney for one of American's most disturbing serial killers. It is his first case. This is a gripping narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.
Sam L. Amirante is a retired judge and lawyer. His first case was The People of the State of Illinois v. John Wayne Gacy. He was later appointed associate judge of the circuit court of Cook County where he served until his retirement in 2005. Mr. Amirante authored procedures adopted by the Illinois General Assembly as the Missing Child Recovery Act of 1984 (I-SEARCH). Sam lives with his wife and children in Barrington, Illinois.
Danny Broderick founded the firm of The Law Offices of Daniel J. Broderick. During his twenty years of private practice, Mr. Broderick represented thousands of persons charged with felony and misdemeanor crimes. He is the author of When Money Talks: Buford Tucker Listens, a novel. Danny has two sons and lives in Lake Zurich, Illinois.

Event with David R. Stoecklein |
Please join us on Friday, October 21 at 6 pm for an event with David Stoecklein, author of Southern California Coastal Mountains to the Sea.
In the heart of the densely populated Southern California lies a magnificent 50,000-acre network of permanently preserved open space, which has been designated as a Natural Landmark by both the State of California and the U.S Department of Interior.
As the largest urban open space in the United States, more than 3 million people live less than 30 minutes from the landscape beauty of the Historic Irvine Ranch. Stretching from the coastal mountains to the sea, it is home to stunning features like deeply forested oak woodlands, vast canyons and hillsides that fill with seasonal wildflowers and a unique geological formation known as "The Sinks" in Limestone Canyon, which originated some thirty-five million years ago and has the look of a miniature Grand Canyon.
For over a century these magnificent lands were used by cowboys for cattle grazing. Today, the public has access to thousands of acres of open space and parklands, representing an important chapter of land preservation and conservation.
In this new title, David Stoecklein uses his camera to document the beautiful varied landscape that makes up the Irvine Ranch. He has worked closely with ranchers and cowboys from every Western state. Through his work, he has gained a deep understanding of and respect for cowboys. His quest to keep the spirit of the West alive is heartfelt and uncompromising. David spends every free moment photographing cowboys and all elements of their lives, preserving their heritage and traditions. He resides in Sun Valley with his wife, Mary, and their three sons. |
