Applications open for our Sixth Annual
BoardWalk Governance Fellowships
at Harvard Business School
December 9-12, 2009

For the sixth year, we are pleased to invest in nonprofit board governance by offering up to six fellowships to a compelling course at Harvard Business School, "Governing for Nonprofit Excellence: Critical Issues for Board Leadership." 

To date, we have sponsored 29 nonprofit and foundation board members to this dynamic course, and the response from participants has been uniformly enthusiastic:  "Transformational," "excellent preparation for expanded duties," "a terrific use of my time," and "Who else but Harvard could put together such a terrific program?"

Deb NeumanThe Arthritis Foundation has named Debra G. Neuman  Chief External Relations Officer, a new position overseeing marketing and development. Deb brings to this key role a wealth of experience leading fundraising, marketing and communications in complex not-for-profit organizations. 
 
Since 2003, Deb has headed the combined marketing and fundraising disciplines at CARE USA and the University of San Diego, where she currently serves as Vice Chancellor, External Relations as well as President of the UC San Diego Foundation. Previously, she spent 22 years in various roles with IBM.  Deb has a BA from Wesleyan University.

Madoff losses tied to foundation's board size


In a study covered by the New York Times and the Chronicle of Philanthropy, a majority of more than 100 foundations that lost from 30-100% of their assets in the Madoff scandal had fewer than five board members.  The analysis, by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, offers instructive reading for anyone interested in nonprofit governance.
