United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta
Mandate: Chair, Early Learning Commission
Status: Search just launched; write-up pending.

Building on its seven year effort to increase awareness and make improvements in the area of early learning which started in 1999 with the Georgia Early Learning Initiative (GELI), UWMA formed an Early Learning Commission (ELC) to oversee its effort to achieve its overall goal of ensuring young children have the tools needed to learn once they begin kindergarten.

Modeled after the regional Commission on Homelessness, which UWMA developed in 2002 at the request of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the ELC has developed a regional plan - a blueprint -  for early learning by joining people from 13 counties - representing government, business, faith-based, and nonprofit groups.  The first commission has identified the strategies outlined in the blueprint and a second commission is in the process of convening to implement these strategies.
