Insights for the Professionally Curious |
December 19, 2008 |
Good Morning!
At this time of year, I suggest that your focus should be on your family, your faith and sharing warm feelings with your staff and guests ... and 'tis the season. Hanukkah starts on Sunday and Christmas will come and go before next week's issue of the EHC comes out.
Accordingly, I won't clog your head up with business things to think about today ... but I couldn't let the day pass without giving you at least SOMETHING to think about. So I pass along two brief message for the season ... and for every other time of year as well. Next week
Happy Holidays.

Holiday Wishes Keeping It Simple
I wish we would stop obsessing about why this is the holiday season and what we call it, so let's just make it easy:
- If you are a Christian, Merry Christmas.
- If you are Jewish, enjoy the moments of Hanukkah.
- If you are a pagan, have a great Winter Solstice.
- If you celebrate Kwanzaa, have a great holiday.
- If you are Muslim, I hope you had a joyous Eid.
- If you do not have a preference, have a nice life.
I wish we would remember that our strength is in diversity, not homogeneity. Celebrate what you celebrate. Love who you love. Believe what you believe ... and grant others the same right. If we resolve to be men and women of good will, we can work all this out.
I wish you tidings of comfort and joy.

Help Me Remember ...
A Plea to Divine Providence
Help me remember that the driver who cut me off in traffic last night may have been a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help me remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly may be a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Help me remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slowly through the store aisles and blocking my shopping progress may be savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they'll go shopping together.
Remind me each day that, of all the gifts given to us by Divine Providence, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those I hold dear. Also open my heart to all humanity. Let me be slower to judge ... and quicker to forgive, show patience and have genuine empathy.
