Escape the dog days of summer with a tour along the back roads of Johnny Appleseed Country! August at the picturesque Fruitlands Museum in Harvard marks the opening of the Visceral Murmerers exhibit, featuring photographs by Scott Erb and paintings by Cynthia Woehrle and Brian Burris, along with a performance by Love Dogs to close out the summer concert series. See what more than 100 local craftspeople are creating with a visit to the 38th annual Templeton Arts and Crafts Festival on August 18-19 on the Templeton common! And while you're in town, enjoy tea in the garden of the Narragansett Historical Society.  Love folk music? Plan to spend a relaxing evening at the Wachusett Valley Folk Festival in Westminster featuring headliners Joan Osborne and John Gorka. There's so much to enjoy in Johnny Appleseed Country! Martha's Vineyard

When Jazz goes on vacation, it goes to Martha's Vineyard! The Martha's Vineyard Jazz Festival will be held August 4-11. Enjoy the diversity of jazz in a variety of venues! Mohawk Trail Region

Late summer brings food, antique cars, artisans, crafters, music, and family friendly fun for the Turners Falls Block Party on August 11th from 2 to 8 p.m.  Later in the evening, the River of Lights Lantern Parade lights up the canal and riverside bike path, culminating in the release of Thai style lanterns into the night sky! Make a lantern at the Block Party or bring your own. More information on cultural activities in Turners Falls is available at www.turnersfallsriverculture.org.

MetroWest

August is a booming month for MetroWest's Farmers Markets, as new crops are harvested. Once you have the produce, then what do you do with it? Check out the Culinary Underground cooking classes in Southborough, which include "Gourmet Vegetable Fare," "Raiding the Garden," kids' and teens' classes, and weekly Couples Night. Nantucket Island

One of the most highly regarded antiques events on the East Coast, the 35th Annual August Antiques Show at Bartlett's Farm August 3-6 is a Nantucket summer favorite! Full of fun activities, lectures, and parties, it benefits the Nantucket Historical Association and is managed by the Antiques Council.  Events include a Preview Party, Expert Designer Panel and a Cocktail Party and Dinner. The event attracts collectors and enthusiasts to the 44 distinguished exhibitors, who present American and European art and antique items.

North of Boston

Get in touch with your inner photographer at the Essex Heritage Photo Safari on Saturday, August 4th! Head to historic Beverly to capture Long Hill's blooming flower fields. This former family retreat has been renowned for its gardens for almost a century. Also explore a popular loop trail through quintessentially New England woodlands dotted by vernal pools and imposing boulders. Plymouth County

Project Arts of Plymouth's Summer Concert Series takes place every Wednesday evening in August from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Concerts are held in Pilgrim Memorial Park (next to Mayflower II at State Pier), located on the beautiful Plymouth waterfront at the intersection of Water & Leyden Streets. There is ample public parking in and around the concert site!

Southeastern Massachusetts

The 9th Annual South Coast Artists Studio Tour will be held August 18-19! Visit the studios of some of the best artists living, working and exhibiting in the four beautiful coastal towns of Tiverton, Little Compton, Westport and Dartmouth. The self-guided tour features over 70 exhibiting artists, working in such mediums as oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography, sculpture, basketry, fiber arts, ceramics, glass, wood, metal and jewelry. Free and open to the public

The Berkshires

The highlight of Autumn is The Lenox Apple Squeeze , now celebrating 33 years. Lenox will host this weekend on September 22 and 23th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Handmade crafts, sculptures, and original art works fill the streets along with handmade jewelry, textiles, wood carvings, leather goods, and  hand woven clothing. Enjoy foods, wines, beers and delicacies. Greater Merrimack Valley

The Lowell Quilt Festival on August 9-11 is one of the country's foremost celebrations of the art of quilting! Enjoy live jazz along the banks of the Merrimack River in Lowell on August 10th and 11th at the Merrimack Valley Jazz Festival, featuring artists from across the U.S. And on August 18th, celebrate Southeast Asian culture at the Southeast Asian Water Festival, the largest festival of its kind on the East Coast, at Lowell Heritage State Park.

Central Massachusetts

Blackstone Canalfest is a classic street festival with music, entertainment, vendors, food, numerous kids' activities, horse-and-wagon rides, kayak rides, historic as well as current canal project information, a giant raffle, and much more. The purpose of this event is to celebrate and enjoy the heritage of the Canal district. Held on Saturday, September 8th, this annual event is free, festive and most of all, fun!

Franklin County

The Journey of E, to be performed Saturday, August 11th at Memorial Hall Theater in Shelburne Falls, is both an anthology of the history of Jazz and an homage to Edith Piaf. The music spans the period from 1928 through 1945 and straddles the music scene in both New York and Paris. Written and performed by Marcel and Beyond the Sun, the show features superb jazz vocalist Carolyn Raming! The TD Bank 27th Anniversary Pops by the Sea outdoor concert will be held on the Hyannis Village Green on Sunday, August 12th! Then, enjoy the beats of the 8th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival on August 11th at Provincetown Town Hall and on August 13th at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Greater Springfield

Every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. through September 6th, the Springfield Business Improvement District presents the Stearns Square Concert Series in downtown Springfield! The 2012 lineup for these outdoor shows includes Luther Guitar Junior Johnson (July 26), Christine Ohlman from the Saturday Night Live Band (August 2), The Smithereens (August 9), Black 47 (August 16), Draw the Line (August 23), John Eddie (August 30) and local favorites Ray Guillemette Jr. & Lindsey LaBelle (September 6).

Hampshire County

Paintbox Theatre presents "Zorro!" in the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts at the Smith College Campus in Northampton August 1-4!
