Legislative News
News from Sacramento
The Governor released his revised budget on May 14, kicking off what is expected to be a tense and lengthy debate over details. Although at first glance, K-12 education seems to have escaped another round of major cuts, the revised budget artificially lowers the funding floor for Prop. 98 and will result in less money being provided to K-12 districts.

Prop. 98, passed by voters in 1988, sets a floor or minimum for funding K-12 education and community colleges. The formula is tied to inflation and other factors.  Prop 98 may also be suspended if the state cannot fulfill its obligations to school districts. The Lafayette School District, like others statewide, has until June 30th to finalize their school budget for the coming year.

PTA Joins in Historic Lawsuit
On May 20 the California State PTA joined more than 60 children and nine school districts (including Alameda and San Francisco) in filing a lawsuit claiming that the state of California has failed in their constitutional obligation to support public schools. This unprecedented action on the part of the PTA comes as a last resort effort to force the state Legislature and governor to fix a broken education funding system. The lawsuit would require Sacramento to fund schools based on what state law requires they offer to children - qualified teachers, books, physical education, science labs, special education, English language instruction, etc.

The California case follows similar lawsuits across the country, many of which have resulted in courts setting significantly higher levels of school funding. All legal representation for the plaintiffs is pro bono, thereby incurring no legal costs to the PTA and other organizations and individuals involved.

Events at The Lafayette Library

It's summer and time to catch up on your reading! We're not talking about the latest bestsellers, trashy romances or high-speed thrillers (although we think they're just fine), but rather the books that have fallen off our collective culture's radar. The Friends of the Lafayette Library are pleased to bring Steve Tollefson back for his third visit to the Lafayette Library, Professor Tollefson of the UCB English Department will talk about his latest list of "Lost Books," and these recommendations have a special California-bent. Think Steinbeck, Stegner, Mailer and Didion, and a whole bunch of names you've never heard of, and join us for an evening of great conversation and, best of all, fantastic reading recommendations.

Steve Tollefson is the Director of the UC Berkeley Writers at Work series and he oversees the freshman Summer Reading List, from which the tradition of "Lost Books" grew.
Thursday June 17th, at 7:30 pm - Lafayette Library and Learning Center, Arts & Science Room.  For more information, visit http://www.lafayettelib.com
