Principal's Message
Dear Acalanes Community,

It is hard to believe but the end of the school year is quickly approaching. Our students recently completed a week of STAR testing. I would like to thank all our students for taking the test seriously and all the parents and guardians for encouraging the students show their best effort. We will receive the results of the tests in September. Currently, students are taking Advanced Placement exams. We wish them all the best as they go through two weeks of examination.

Construction has begun at the Acalanes swimming pool. This Measure E funded project will provide the school with an upgraded swimming pool. We are estimating the time of completion to be January 2011.

Our Performing Arts department has had a very busy month. The Dance program held their spring performance where students from Acalanes and Miramonte performed an evening show and a student assembly at the Miramonte High School. The performers also participated in the Great America Dance Days, a wonderful opportunity to showcase our dance talent.

Acalanes DramaDons are currently performing "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare....abridged". This highly entertaining show will take you through all the works of Shakespeare in an hour and a half. If you haven't had the opportunity to see the show, we still have two performances left, Thursday May 6 and Friday May 7.

Spring Choral Concert was a great success. Our singers also had an opportunity to travel to Chicago and perform during their tour. On May 18th, our Bella Voce and Chamber Singers will compete at the Golden State Choral Competition. Good luck to our singers!

Instrumental concerts are also coming up with the Jazz Concert being held on May 12th in the Acalanes Performing Arts Center. We hope to see many of you attend and enjoy the music of our talented performers.

Acalanes Open House will be held on Tuesday, May 18th. We will be showcasing many of our wonderful programs. This is a great opportunity to get an idea of what is occurring in your child's classroom, what the AHS clubs are doing and to visit with your child's teachers. Please mark you calendars. We will be sending out detailed information and the evening's program as we get closer to the date.

Spring sports are nearing the end of their seasons. Most of our teams have a week of competition left prior to the playoffs. It has been a successful season for many Acalanes athletes and we wish them good luck as they enter their post season. I would also like to thank our Varsity Baseball team and Justin Hughes (head coach) for supporting the Lafayette Little League "Challenger Giants". The boys hosted a team of players with special needs and spent a day of teaching them how to play baseball. It was a wonderful event for all parties involved.

Thank you for reading

The Instrumental Music Department participated in the recent CMEA Band & Orchestra Festival at San Ramon Valley High School on April 30th and May 1st. The festivals offer an official evaluation on the performance ensembles of the majority of schools throughout California. I suppose one can consider them as similar to the "STAR Tests" for music education, but utilizing authentic assessment criteria as opposed to multiple choice standardized tests. Congratulations to the following ensembles for receiving these ratings:

Concert Band for receiving a Superior Rating with a Superior in Sight-Reading
Symphonic Band for receiving an Excellent Rating with a Excellent in Sight-Reading
Wind Ensemble for receiving a Unanimous Superior Rating & Award (the highest ranking)
Orchestra for receiving an Excellent Rating & Award with a Superior in Sight-Reading
Jazz Ensemble for receiving a Unanimous Superior Rating & Award (back in February in San Francisco)

I would like to commend and thank all the students for their exemplary work in making music such an integral part of the Acalanes curriculum. Quality music education doesn't happen by accident and certainly enhances the total educational experiences of all the students on our campus. Acalanes is certainly fortunate in having such a giving and supportive community that is Lafayette!

The Friends of the Lafayette Library and The Storyteller Bookstoreare proud to present Newbery medal winner Karen Cushman (The Midwife's Apprentice and Catherine, Called Birdy) and her latest historical novel, Alchemy and Meggy Swann.Meggy has been summoned for by a father she has never met. When she arrives at his doorstep with only clothes and her lone friend, a goose, she is met with disdain and dismissal.  It could be that she is a girl, but it probably also that Meggy can't walk without using two crutches.  Now Meggy doesn't have any choice but to head out into the streets of London to find food since her father has more important things to do than feed her.  He is an alchemist searching to change metal into gold.  When Meggy heads out into the streets, she makes more friends than she ever has had before, finds a young man who could be more than a friend, and allows readers to experience the colors, smells, and noises of life in England at this time.
Wednesday May 19th, at 7:00 pm - Lafayette Library and Learning Center, Arts & Science Room.  For more information, visit http://www.lafayettelib.com.  Books will be available for signing and are sold by our co-sponsor, The Storyteller Bookstore.
